Some of the bikes you guys posted made me sad.  Especially the CB750K.  I would love to have one of those in stock condition.

They're only bad when they're overpriced.

Heck, 12 XS-650s for $2500. That's ~$200/pc.

That assumes these are semi complete and running. I just about got $620 for one that did a month ago, and it had a good title in my name and 5800 miles, and a coated tank and endless cool stuff, lots of yellow powdercoated parts etc etc. I'd call it top $ for an xs in that shape. If you get 5-6 titled runners in that bunch with just fit up the parts that are there, that = just about breaking even.

Yikes, people have gone nuts.
However I must say I am more likely to buy that than one of the "bobbers" around here.

That motor looks lost in that frame, I'd have tried to run like a GS1100 or a GS1000 motor in it instead. I also dont like the hardtail BS. 90% of bikes that are for sale for 1/2 their build cost are hardtails. I'd guess less than 25% of bikes on the road are hardtails.
Its like my analogy to Foreclosed houses in my area.
Less than 10% of houses are under overhead power lines. But 90% of foreclosures are under power lines.

There are 3 types of bikes:
   * Bikes for riding
   * Bikes for posing (like most of the bobbers)
   * Bikes of "what the f*** were they thinking?" which covers at least half of the bobbers and choppers.

I know I'll probably never get back the $1400 additional I put into Junior (paid $1100 for him) . I don't care. He is looks so cool and is fun to ride (and pose). Quality parts and rare OEM parts are expensive even though cheaper parts could have worked. Its just the price you pay to get what you want and the satisfaction of having a 1 of a kind bike. And a bike you are proud to have.

If I were to ever sell Junior, I know I'd take a loss (consider it rent for having it for a year or more) and would want it to go to someone that would continue to preserve it and improve it. Otherwise, it would go back to stock ( parts whore here - OEM parts are in the garage) then sell as a stock GS and sell the after market parts separately or barter to a local GS'r for bike work. (been there, done that. With extra parts...  I'm happy with the help and they are happy with free parts. We store parts, swap parts and rarely throw anything away.)

So while I can appreciate the effort that went into these bobbers, the owners need to be realistic about the price. Things do depreciate. Some things as add-ons cost more than the value they add to the bike (same applies to homers when you're going to sell one. Bathroom upgrade: 2x return on your cost. New carpet? usually a loss as new owner would re-carpet anyway.)

While I'd never want one or ride one, I do appreciate seeing a really shined up Harley on a sunny day at Alki Beach. Once there were 4 in a row. Absolutely a beautiful site! I was very happy riding my GS500.

Yea That WTF were they thinking class covers most of the Choppers/bobbers.
Bikes built by non riders who have more $ than sense, taste, observation power, and most every other neccesary quality to be a bike builder.
And oddly some times its the lack of $ that makes them do stupid sheite ... like one fool who polished a YZF 600 (steel frame) and put an estended arm on it, cos he already had that bike and didn't have to buy one. Never mind that it looks stupid, takes a ton of maintenance and it looks rusty most of the time ...
The other thing is, the more goobered up parts you are having to make for the bike ... the less it will appeal to the rest of the riding public.

In 09 I built a chopper bobber out of a savage. It wasn't a true chopper it was raked @ the triple only, and the grand total of parts I made for it - 2. Yes 2, upper and lower tripes. OK it had 1 aftermarket part - the tail light and all the rest were stock parts from other bikes.
The rear fender of the savage I cut and modified, but I had a spare rear fender to go with it. The bike could be returned to stock in about a saturday's worth of work. The coolest part was, it would ahve out handled and out braked as well as out run a stock savage. I first built the chopped bike and had it entirely intact with the full body set that was in original colors. People thought something was different but couldn't tell what was different without me pointing it out to them, even savage owners, They knew it was longer but didn't know how.
I cut and trimmed the rear fender and they instantly saw that it was bobbed. However most non riders dont know bobber vs chopper so they called it a chopper.

That is a savage turned into a cafe racer. And I'd say its a beautiful round peg in a square hole ... I dont think its possible to do a better job of putting round pegs in square holes. A savage is screaming to be turned into a bobber and this dude make it a gorgeous cafe.

Oh BTW their price for the kit is simply outrageous. Cos the mods they have made cost all of ummmm ummmm 200 bucks.
There is a bunch of crap we dont need as well in that "Kit".
OK so who cares about shaving the bottom of the tank. The stock savage tank will give you that upper profile line/curve that fits the seat.
The biggest mod is that mondo rear shock. BTW you can get a set from a junkyard for 30 bones, one off an 80's UJM, nearly anything that is 13 inch would do, but for an example one off a nighthawk would work great. Then they have a seat/tail like a cafe racer which is a plank of plywood/steel that is laid on top of the stock seat rails and the vinyl and foam is just stapled to the wood. Simple as can be. Then there is the side covers. They I am sure made em out of fiberglass and moulds etc etc, but I am betting something like an old KZ or a CB honda has a side cover set that would get close to it.
Then pipe and a flat handlebar and what not and you're home free. I'd actually use a smaller dia front wheel probably an old dirt bike rear wheel and level out the bike with the deraked and lowered front.
Seriously if I had 300 bucks and you didn't want painted and shiny crap and you didn't care about finishing the side covers or some little plastic/fiberglass/metal work, you'd get change back.
They put the ignition key and other BS where the speedo used to go in the center of the tank ... WTF, this bike has the ignition key under the seat on the left. Why get it into the tank ... stupid idea. The speedo and idiot lights are in the center of the tank, that is the best feature of this bike, you dont have to worry about swapping triples out or even a whole FE out with a dirt bike cos the guages done need to be mounted anywhere.
Seriously its easier to build a better cafe than they did and cheaper.
However see I can build 1 with wrecking yard parts, but if you have ambitions of building say 30 a year where are you going to get 30 sets of KZ side covers or 30 pairs of 13 inch shocks.
Anyway good example. Maybe time to start looking for a savage to cafe ?
