Inner fairing install question

My son has an '05 GS500. For reasons that made sense to him at the time, he partially removed the black inner fairing plastic, and now can't get it back in.  I'm a bit stumped by one thing, too.

On each side of the fairing, there's an allen head screw that goes into the side of the painted fairing, and holds the painted fairing and the black inner fairing together. There's a silver clip nut behind the fairing that the screw goes into.  What I can't figure out is how the black inner fairing  is supposed to fit here. It seems like it has to go between the silver painted fairing and the clip nut, but it doesn't appear to fit that way.

I know I'm doing a lousy job explaining this, but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks.

Never mind, I figured it out.  I needed to use a flat bladed screwdriver to pry apart the place where the clip nut goes, to make enough room for the inner fairing to fit in between.  This is a pretty kludgy setup.  My '07 Bandit is much simpler.
