I thought I'd go ahead and start this off.I used to use a pail of ZEP parts cleaner, when I was an auto mechanic.I haven't been able to find the same stuff, because the enviro'mentalist' says it's a pollutant.Up until today,I was using GUNK brand spray type carb cleaner, followed by a blow job with compressed air. :D Today I picked up a pail of Berryman Chem Dip carburetor and parts cleaner to try out.I've never heard of this stuff before but it is supposed to be good for carbs, crusty valves, and pistons.I stripped my carbs down further than most people do.I removed everything but the shafts, springs, and butterflies.I'm giving them a 24 hour soak.I dropped the first carb in this afternoon and all it's small parts. The new ethanol based fuels turned every rubber part to a gummy mess.I removed what I could and will let the cleaner do the rest.

Carbs torn down and parts spread out.

I hope this is the good stuff for cleaning carbs and parts.

See ya tomorrow around 3:30pm.Enjoy your bath little carb.

I've heard nothing but good stuff about Berrymans. All the guys on the GSResources use it.

Why?Are you scared?  :icon_razz:

I always do.This time I did it so I could fit them in the carb cleaner canister.I've never had problems doing it this way.Plus, every rubber part in these carbs have turned to goo.I wanna make sure they are as clean as humanly possible, when I reinstall them.  :thumb:

Well I am a little upset with the Berrymans. It did a half @$$ job of cleaning the carb with a 24 hour soak.It also turned my carb a dark gray color.I still used Gunk brand brake parts spray cleaner and a brush to get them clean. The dark gray color is permanent.I'm a little peeved about the color change.I used compressed air to dry and clean out the carb passages.

Dirty carb on left and clean carb on right.Notice the color difference.

Dirty carb on left and clean card on right.Notice the clean carb is much darker in color.  >:( Dark color carbs makes it harder to spot a leak.

Dirty carb on left and clean on right.I had some light shining on the right carb in this pic which made it look lighter in color.

I'm doing the other carb the same as this one so they will match colors,I hope. The next three sets I will use Gunk brand spray type brake cleaner and I always use compressed air to clean and dry my carbs.I can not recommend Berrymans for cleaning carbs. It's just quicker and easier to use a good brake or carb cleaner and compressed air.I don't like the fact that Berrymans turned my carbs a dark color. It makes it a little harder to spot fuel leaks, especially on an all black bike like mine. The darker color will not affect the carbs in anyway,it only affects my personal tastes.

That's cool.I was talking to a friend that I worked with when I was an auto mechanic, and he said that Berryman's was reformulated to met enviro specs. That maybe why mine isn't so good and the older stuff is.

Guys: Read the instructions on the can. Overnight is IMHO too long to dip carbs in that stuff. 15-30 minutes is as much time as they should spend in. You'll eat the coating off the carbs.

I threw an extra carb in this Berryman's stuff overnight from a smaller bike to see what would happen... I'd heard the older versions of this stuff will completely eat away a carb over a few days and wanted to see the damage firsthand. The carb dip ate the yellow chromate coating off the carbs, leaving them a dull grey, just like this. I'd wager it's done the same to these GS carbs, except that the coating was either clear or silver originally.

I tried running the carb... it never worked right after that; eveything was too rich. It had enlarged the idle opening, which is a cast in feature on the carb I was experimenting with.

I'll soak bodies if they're really bad, and always throw the brass parts in, but only for 30 minutes; rinse with water, inspect, go.

I had no issues with Berryman's harming the carbs except the dark color. It didn't even clean the goo out of the float bowls.I still ended up using brake cleaner to clean them. The older stuff is probably way better. This stuff I got was crap.

The Buddha

Has anyone tried just plain hot - like boiling hot water. I am near about sure it would work as good as the berrymans.
Add in dish washing liquid for extra clean.
Then add cheerios for fiber.
Then maple syrup to taste. And I can add syrup for an extra 10 bucks to your carbs when you send to me.
Cool.
Buddha.
