The Suzuki Owners Manual lists 10~15mm measured at the end of the hand lever while the Suzuki Service Manual lists 4mm measured at the other end of the lever where the cable connects. Two different measurements that probably equal the same amount of free play.

Dale

You're right Dale, I just looked again at the Suzuki service manual and the diagram shows the the 4mm speck is for the base of the lever. It's still strange that Suzuki would measure the spec in 2 different ways, one in the service manual and one in the owner's.

In any case, I wonder whether setting the play a bit below spec allows the clutch to disengage more fully and avoid potential issues. Not a question this noob could answer though  :D

yeh i haven't adjusted mine yet... but i think I may be in the market for a new chain...
2004 GS500F (Sold)
2001 GS500 (being torn apart)
1992 GS500E (being rebuilt)

As long as there's enough free play in the cable to allow for full engagement of the clutch it'll work fine. Tension on the cable at all times would be cause for slipping and wear of the clutch plates.

Removing freepay from the cable will not make the clutch operate any better or more efficiently, all you are doing is moving its biting point relative to the levers position. If you take all the freeplay out of the cable and mechanism the clutch will be affected by vibration and start to slip as it heats up and expand.

My comment was not directed at you Paalak.....however if you or anyone else believes 2mm is an optimum amount of freeplay at the lever......you go for it  :thumb:

What ever works for you.I have had no issues running between 2mm and 4mm since I upgrade my clutch. Before it was at 20mm and my clutch still slipped.I bought it that way,and it was a negotiating point.
PICS are GONE never TO return.
