So I'm driving to work today and as I get to a red light I reach with my left foot to go to first. I don't hit anything. My shift pedal must have come loose and fallen off. Not really sure how that happened since I had tightened it down pretty well last time.

I get to work and I call my local dealer and they say they only carry parts for bikes up to 10yrs old (I have a 92 GS500). Does anyone know if one of the newer shift pedals will work with a 92? 

Yes, they will.  Your dealer should have suggested that as an alternative to get you back on the road, and make a sale.

The dealer either lied or there was a miscommunication there.They can order parts but normally only stock parts for bikes back 10 years.

Any years GS shifter will work.Use a drop of blue loctite on the bolt.I have never lost a shifter, but I have lost the bolt.I was a luck one that day.I was 200 miles from home when I discovered it.

I called them back and apparently they also don't have shift pedals for the newer bikes. I really wanted to be able to pick one up locally since I'm at work and would really like a way to get home later today. BTW, where I work I can't leave my bike after hours, unless I fill out a bunch of paperwork. Going to keep the search up.
I've only been riding for a little under 2 months so I'm still a pretty new rider and that gave me a scare this morning.

Do you have a pair of vice grips, or canyou get it into seconds? If you can, with a little bit of juggling, you'll get it home just fine.

Got an old 1986 civic home once without a clutch, pita but it worked!

Wrap/tape a small piece of rag around the shift shaft.Then lock a pair of small vice grips on the covered shaft.Now wrap duck tape tightly around the handle so it can't vibrate open.Absolutely only use this as a last step resort to getting home.If those pliers come off they will bounce off the road and into the wheel or chain, locking it up.Don't put them on the shaft or it will need to be replaced to get the shifter back on.

When you discovered this, how long had it been since you last shifted? I mean... I don't know about you, but I tend to shift pretty damn frequently. Why not walk find somewhere to park and walk back along the side of the rood to find your lever? It can't have gone far.

I hadn't shifted for a while. I was on a highway, which is why I didn't go back.  Planning on driving by there on my car later tonight to see if I can find it.

Just go to ebay and look for "gs500 shift (lever,pedal)" for a seller near you. That's be the fastest way to get one. As low as $10. Any year 1989-2011 as they're all the same. Use thread lock on the bolt when you put it back on.

What ben said about the vice grips, but I'd find a bit of sheet or tube aluminium or copper to protect the splines on the shaft.

Thanks everyone, I was able to get my bike home thanks to a friend and his truck. I ordered a lever from ebay and hopefully I can get back on the road soon. I'm in San Diego, CA if anyone was still wondering.

It is nice when people have their location in the profile. When they ask for parts or help, you'll know if they are near you and can help them out. Some people mention their location in their postings.

A lot of us have spare parts filling up our garages and nothing to do with them unless someone needs them. Next month when my bike cave is nearing completion, I'll be fire saleing a bunch of extra stuff I don't want to put back on the shelves. Amazing how stuff accumulates.

The shift pedal I ordered is getting here today. Really fast shipping. I'm really glad I wasn't off the road for too long.
