Hi all, for a week now I have this annoying noticeable engine sound, when over 4-5k rpm, and when accelerating hard or switching to inferior gear. I was almost sure it was the chain, because it didn't do it when on the stand and accelerated hard, but today I just noticed it does it even when I ride it, pull the clutch and get to high rpm, which means it's not because of pressure on the chain. I have spent the last couple of hours reading about engine noises and nothing similar to this. The bike is a '92 gs500e and has 64k+ km on it. I have had it for the last 1600 km, and never had a bike before, and I have no idea if the previous owners did any valve clearance check or anything like that. The noise I hear it's like metal hitting metal, like something it's loose, but just when rpm go high.

does the sound get faster when the RPM's go up?

Could still be the chain - chains with tight spots can make Noises as they try to bend of the front sprocket at higher speeds. Thus, your front sprocket could also be in need of replacing.

Not cam end play noise.If it's coming from the engine area,I would say it's a valve adjustment issue,bad cam chain guide or bad cam chain tensioner.If you have really been hammering on the bike then it could be a case of goats.

i've had the same problem. it turned out to be the cam chain tensioner. sometimes it doesnt readjust, and you have to give a quick hard rev to get it working again.

the sound doesn't increase almost at all, it just does it when rpm go high or low all of a sudden. I read about goats, I REALLY hope it's not that....because I sometime ride the bike hard. I have bought new chain and sprockets, I will install them today. I could only find a new chain at a suzuki dealership and I think it's a 520 with 120 links. they said this one t's for the gs500, but as far as I know it should be a 110. Is it ok to use?

and the power and speed, it's all there, just that it makes this annoying sound every time I accelerate a little harder or I engine brake.

Is your engine oil level low?

hi, thank you all for the help, apparently the noise wasn't the chain, nor the engine at all, but my clutch cable loose. I am sorry for wasting your time, I am very new to motorbikes. Do you still recommend a valve check?

ps. I dropped it today on the right side for the second time since I have it, and I feel VERY bad about it, I was trying to put it on the center stand. There are some marks on the engine cover(there were some before), but looks like there are only scratches. Do you think I could have damaged something inside the engine?

You should check the valves just to be sure that everything is in spec.I wouldn't worry about a standing drop,unless the engine hit something hard.

I'm new to motorcycles this year myself and almost dropped it trying to figure out the center stand. A guy I work with told me to lock the handlebars, stand on the center stand, grab onto the back bar, and handlebar at the same time, and pull up. It worked for me, and it pops up on the center stand every time now. As for your problem, it's great that you fixed it. The drop shouldn't have hurt it, but it wouldn't hurt to pop off whatever cover it landed on. Right side has the ignition timing, and left side is your clutch linkage/front sprocket.
