Why does everyone cover their license plate in pics?

Im probably missing something real silly here but i just have to ask.

smackdoogie

Uummm...so that someone doesn't try to register or steal your bikes identity? Or yours.?

Clancy

Ok cool.
Cheers for the info. :)

I dont really even think its too big a deal anyway. I mean 100s of people see it every day on the road, while parked etc......  That said I cover it sometimes anyway.

yea i don't even know why really. what could you do with it? you could check for tickets. I don't think there's any way to find an address with just a plate # is there? cause then you'd have a bunch of people being stalked after every road rage incident.

I can find your address with a last name (partial or full), first name (partial of rull) and atleast 1 personal characteristic (can even be roughly what field you work in) without knowing anything else about you... Scary the level of accessibility people put on the web.

I can take a plate number and get all the info on the owner. For less than respectful people,it means they can find your bike and you.The watch and wait for a good chance to mug you and steal your bike.Possibly come back and break into your home or vehicles.

Yes, anyone in a car can quickly jot down your number. This is true. but online is the world of the unseen, the covert. Meaning...

A person doesn't necessarily need to participate in a forum. They get your number, check the details, and then can do with them what they wish.

Cops can find out where you live - and other things I won't go into here.
Marketers could compile a list of known bike owners and sell the list or try to sell you schtuff.
Thieves can come and take your schit.

I think they would be dissappointed with what they found out about me...what would they steal? my debt...I'll give it to them, for free  :icon_mrgreen:

My sister in law is paranoid about the identity theft issue...I figure they will get the info if they really want it anyway...

the crappy thing is that it is totally anonymous...you don't even know it has happened until you start getting notices in the mail and your credit is done...but I'm not going to worry that much about it...

I live in an average house, drive an average truck & make an average wage...if I was going to hit someone, I would aim higher...

Later.

Anything connected to your license plate is considered public info under the "Freedom of Information Act".Which means they can go online or directly to the DMV and get all the info on you. They can even go get your social security number, birth certificate, criminal record, driving records, and medical records.

And you'd luv it in London. The authorities have these little cars with cameras on the roof that drive around recording their trip. Then, back at the office, they review the video so that parking infringements are issued. In response some folk wrap their plates in plastic bags to obscure the number! Don'tcha luv the way the world has gone!

Wow, the miracle of that internet-thingie!

I'm not in Canada; how about you try California, 19U7787, and post or PM what you find?

The only thing I really fear is that the black helicopter folks will find me through the RFID chip in my driver's license..
