So i got a Crazy idea after looking at this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDJ_f7qOBLs
and i got the idea to one up this guy, make a bigger case and have sub cases for all of my components, fill the component cases with oil and the main case with water!
now it gets tricky  :whisper: put a bubbler on the top of the new plexi computer tower and use the heated oil as a tank heater for FISH! any computer nerds out there that think it'll work or not? see any flaws in my plan? give me your worst  :icon_twisted: i'll post pics when i got the cash to get started

i had an oil filled pc... it wont heat the fish tank tho.

iam lucky in that i work at a transformer factory and have access to electrical grade insulating oil. id still have this setup if it wasn't so dam messy when you need to change components.

maybe if i used a thin plexi and light oil would the heating set up work?  :dunno_black: another thing i just thought of is makeing these sub cases water tight and still be able to open them if i need to change components?

many cases you wont need heatsinks for the cpu or gpu because of the oil. ive built one using vegetable oil. BUT kept hte psu outside the container. just lengthened the wires. what processor are you planning on?

Wouldn't a mineral based oil be better, I believe that vegetable oils break down over time and get rancid----I know olive oil does.

Anyway, sounds like a big mess to me, I've never had a cooling problem.

planing on useing my phenom64 quad core, and it's not a problem of keeping the components cool the oil will do that just fine, but a problem of if it will hear the water outside of the oil for the fish?

and yes i plan on useing mineral oil not cuase i have a heating problem but because i think it would be cool to have a fish tank built into my computer

Zk, you've probably already researched this, and seen reports of the mineral oil in immersed PCs hitting temps of over 80 degrees C after 12 hours or so of being on constant load.

ojstinson

Are you trying to say vegetable oil runs cooler?  Even if it were true ( which I doubt ), who wants to have to change their computer oil every 5000 miles miles because it gets nasty and starts smelling up the house.

yes the temp will get up there, but veggie oil will still run hotter, and the 80C is a max for a gaming PC, mine wont have nearly the power that most people talk about when oil cooling a computer. mine will more then likely run at more of a 60C range after 12 hours.

and for most people when they do these tests under "constent load" they run a driver that will mak out the RAM and CPU capacity for 12 hours, any normal situation will not run at that capacity for more then a few minutes.

Add on a GS500-F oil cooler, filer and oil pump.
heck, just ad a GS500 engine to it! make your own electricity from the generator. Computers run on 12v and 5v so you should be able to eliminate some of the switching power supply.

are you talking a gas powered GS-computer-fish tank? that might be a little much haha

you are right. i changed oil weekly. got through my supply house. 10 gallons of mineral oil. ran this unit about 4 mos

aye. theres one called prime 95. wanted to do this to my amd phenom 2 x4 940. had it overclocked from 4x 3.0 to 4x 3.3. but it was running at load 45c. so i didnt bother. and all games i owned were at max. so no need

yeah i dont do alot of gameing on my computer, this is strictly an "i'm bored" project

Guess that, with a potential 80 degrees C in the oil filled tank, what I was probably trying to say is that there would likely be enough heat headromm to heat exchange out into a seprate fish tank and getting towards that 20s tlevel the fish need. Enjoy the project!
PS
Stuff I luv about this idea is the "cooling" fan still spinning away in the oil......lovely grub.

as soon as i get on track to dealing wiht health issues. going to build another pc cause i feel liek ill be spending time on dialysis. mostly at home. so ill build one to keep me occupied. but am going to use either H2O cooling or cold cooling. an electric chiller. may stay on air but idk. will be 4 if not 6 core. oil cooling i may retro this 2 core intel. and make it a media server. or a pirate raio station. have already built the transmitter. from spare parts. and its a hair under the legal limit for xmitting power. but oil cooling aka fishtanks are fun. and look neat. may take the display case material and build a case from it. well bullet proof glass. have almost enough to make case. theres maybe 4" left of top panel i need to find. but found material from CL for $5 2 4x6ft pieces at 5/8" thick

so i think i've given up on the whole "heating the fish with the CPU" idea, I cant seem to find any see through material that has good enough heat transfer proporties
Turning gas into heat and noise

yamahonkawazuki

well the oil doesnt put out THAT much heat. so there would be minimal heat transfer at best

i was looking around to see if something could work but it looks like i'm just going to go with cheep plexi and put a heater on it, not a huge deal  :dunno_black:
