Browsing Craigs List last night, came upon something odd: free engine. Just haul it away. So......

Here it is:

Says the plastic cam chain tensioner flew apart, sending plastic bits throughout the engine. He cleaned it out but oil light comes on after about 40 minutes. Rather than deal with it, he replaced the engine. Thinks it might just be the oil sensor since he cleaned out everything. Been sitting for a year.
I haven't turned the engine with a wrench yet, but he says it was working when taken out.
Anyway - it was  FREE

atleast worth it for the spare parts... nice find... wish i was that lucky
2004 GS500F (Sold)
2001 GS500 (being torn apart)
1992 GS500E (being rebuilt)

If that was my friend Brian's motor, you got a steal - well you got a steal either way, but he had one of those rare cases of the rear slipper guide on the cam chain go bad. That thing could not have 15K on it, I think it had under 10 when I sold to him.
Cool.

That's what went wrong. So he replaced the engine. Said he cleaned it all out but oil light came on after 40 minutes of riding so he swapped engines. 6k on this one. It will go into a bike - we're going to build a GS500 from the ground up. It will be a fun project and a way to use up some of my parts.
It was here in Seattle.

I doubt you sent him a motor - pretty expensive to send one all across the country.

Engine turns with a wrench. Plugs look OK. Both side casings on, so just missing carbs, exhaust and front sprocket. Hopefully the starter motor is OK. The West Seattle GS500 Club will be building a GS500 from scratch. Can't wait to start this project. Fun and educational. Now I have a reason to finish the bike cave ASAP

No he bought the whole bike from me when he was in SC, hen he moved to AZ. From there he was going to move somewhere else, however I do know he wouldn't ahve swapped a motor, he was starting to part it out.

Made more progress. Nearly everything off the floor except for things on wheels. Plan to get floor all cleaned, acid washed and epoxy fill the cracks and rough spots by the weekend (I work on it after the gym - so from like 9pm-1am). I'd love to get it primed Saturday and maybe the epoxy on Sunday. The bike project makes me want to get the cave done ASAP.

Next is sort all the tools and stuff into their proper place. Not sure if I will put doors on all the cabinets. Doors somehow get in the way and you're always opening a door to look for something. I think doors only on things that shouldn't get dusty - like spray equipment or cleaning rags that need to stay clean.

Then we will start the project. (Oh, need a starter motor and a pickup that goes under the right engine cover, and an oil cooler) Engine did turn easily with a wrench - so it is not all seized up. i think that is a good sign.

At the same time, Trey will get a stock shock as the Kat shock is too stiff and too high.

More pictures coming soon.

This will be a fantastic learning experience for me. I'll be relying on centurychost (aka project manager) and scottychop for guidance and help. Electrical is my specialty. Learning the innerds of the engine will be good for me. Actually between the 3 of us, each has a specialty so it should be a good overall project. There's no area where we are lacking in experience from someone. I will document the project from start to finish.

If you get into the engine and notice you need anything... I have a few extra parts that you can have 8) IE a starter, I'm still down in OK, its been a good trip so far but I can get it on the way when I get home, for say free plus shipping?

Wow!
I do need a started motor. Also oil cooler and lines, and the pickup on the right side under the stator cover. There will be a few other odds & ends we'll need but won't know for a few weeks until we really get started. Still a couple weeks finishing the cave. Frame will be here tomorrow and that will give an idea of what else we might need. It is a secret project for the wifey of one of our members here in West Seattle.

No rush. This will be a few month's project. Enjoy your trip!

This is going to be awesome! Thanks addidasguy and thanks to you, afterbooster as well!
This is the old cb400f cruisin' the viaduct

adidasguy

Thanks again - we're making it for Dave's (centuryghost) wife. DON'T TELL HER! It will be a surprise.
Frame should be here tomorrow and some other parts. The bike cave will be great for this project. I knew there was some reason for going to all this work for a bike cave.

If you build it, they (bikes) will come!

also not to thread jack... I made it to kansas on the way home then had to uhaul... the 89 engine seized... reason yet tbd... not excited. but am already researching installing a 600 engine, with a few minor modifications of course. So I may have even more parts...I'll let you know what the outcome is
