If I use CLR to de-rust a slightly rusty tank do I have to reseal it?

Not sure if this stuff is abrasive enough that it would require a resealing?  It's not bad in there but there's a little bit of gunk/rust that I want to clean out before I put my clean carbs back on...

CLR - OK I guess you then spray it off with your shower and put shampoo on it.

If you want to get rid of a wee bit of dirt you can use diesel and slosh like a maniac and dump it and dry it ... however if you have rust, its pretty much gonna have to be acid etched ... then you might as well coat it with POR15 or kreem.

I'm not sure if CLR will give you the desired result, but I do know that once you de-rust a tank you are supposed to coat it, otherwise it will rust again quickly due to the newly exposed metal.

Grr.  Bike's been out of commission for 2 weeks waiting for random crap to arrive by mail for the carbs and I'm dying to get it back on the road!  Was hoping to be able to use something over-the-counter to do it.

Like I said, it's not too bad, and I'm not sure that it's rust and not just sludgey old gas.  I'm going to do some low-impact cleaning with it and see how it looks...if it's not too bad I'm going to probably just put it back like that--I bought a fuel filter to put in-line so hopefully that will help keep my carbs clean...

If you wanted to buy a de-rust/reseal kit, and you wanted it at your door within 2 days, what online site would you use?  Unless it's a massive price jump I'm willing to get a little bit f%&ked for the luxury of having it for the weekend.

Unfortunately, most gas tank sealer kits can not be shipped by air due to hazardous chemicals.
You might check your local auto parts stores. A car gas tank kit would work - same stuff - except it is more than you need.

Anyone used CLR before? Not sure it would be a wise choice compared to Acetone, MEK (methyl Ethyl Ketone) or Muratic Acid... You want something with a very low boiling point.

put the filter in it and drive it. if you do your best to keep the tank full you can probably coat it in the off season. my 02 cents.

just use some gasoline to wash out the interior of loose rust. looks like fine red dust in the bucket. rinse repeat and you'll be ok for a while.

after i did the rinse i rode like that, with no fuel filter, for a good 6 months before i did a por 15 coat. no problems

I agree.If you need it short notice,try NAPA.They carry kits.Bike shops do to but they are usually expensive.My local A$$vanced Auto used to carry the POR-15 kits.
