Idle Screw Troubles

Alright, so my bike was idling a little low, 900-1000 rpms, so I decided to try to adjust the idle screw. Well I got it so out of whack, it won't idle without the choke on. Can anyone help me out here? How can I get the idle to 1200 rpm or so?

I've pretty much completely lost any general idea of how far in/out the idle screw should be... the only way to get the bike to start up and run is with the choke on.

Is there any way to screw it all the way in/all the way out and work from one side to the sweet spot?

Idle should be set after the bike has been rode for roughly 20 minutes to be sure that the engine is completely warmed up.
