GSTWINS!

I'd like some GS expert advice on my issue with my '09 GS500. For a while sometimes my tach lights will work then not work, e.g. the blinker and high beam lights (typically). In addition, when the bike is on and I twist the throttle, my headlights become less bright but when I lay off the throttle they become brighter again.

Any suggestions?

The bike is in the shop for some tune up, front shock repair, front sprocket swap and this mechanic is telling me that the bike is only working off the battery and not ....blah blah blah......so he can rebuilt or buy a new one for like $250? $150 to rebuild? What the hell is he talking about?

The bike starts and runs and it's just sometimes the lights on tach work then don't work and the level of illumination from my headlights vary.

Please advise.

Thanks!

Paulcet

The stator is what he's talking about. Eventually it won't start and run unless you use a battery tender.

Stator or rectifier/regulator is probably bad and not charging the battery properly.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

No warranty expired like 9 months ago. So how much does a stator cost? And how difficult is it to replace on my own? Does $250 all in for the repair sound right? Mechanic is in Queens (NYC), NY.

On mine it was the connections from the AC Generator to the regulator that went bad (you could see burn marks on the insulation)... so replaced all the connections and been working much better since...

There are some easy checks you can do to see what the problem is.. The gs500 manual tells you exactly what to do and look for... First thing is always disconnect harness/connectors and check continuity over the cables... Very easy to find a broken wire fast...
