Gauge swap?

Has anyone on here removed their gauge cluster and replaced it with something else?  Im looking for a winter project and wanted to know what (if any) options there are for putting gauges from another bike on the GS.  If you have please let me know.  The search yielded some SV threads but no pics or specifics.  Perhaps these;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-02-SV-650S-Gauges-Cluster-Speedometer-4k-/160644023530?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item25672144ea

Or anything else that would fit.

Thanks!

Vaypor (sp?) has been done by some. In fact, I recall a Very recent thread on it - or old thread brought back to life.

I have done several bikes using 99-02 S and nakid gauges. Not difficult to install. Along with the gauge, you will need the wire harness that attaches to it. Need the wire diagram of the donor bike and yours. Match the wires up. Pull the tach signal from the yellow / black wire, if yours is pre-04. The fuel and temp light are not used on the SV gages. You will need a speed sensor as well. The SV front axle is 2mm larger on diameter, I made a bushing to make up the difference. Might be able to get by without it.

Not sure about the 03+ SV if it pulls the speed from the front wheel or sprocket. If the sprocket, the pulse timing will off and will not work.
Common sense in not very common.

Yikes! We're being attacked by Ebay links again! Here's the shorter versions:

OP, feel free to edit your links accordingly... you don't need all the trash that Ebay attaches beyond the item number...

My Girlfriend has an '05 SV650S and it pulls speed from the front wheel same as the '99-'02 models.

Yes. I just had my baby painted solid matte black. Added some nice light blue chrome grips, threw on a Jardine, new kn filter, jet kit, and went down 2 teeth in front. Lost no top end and do not have to shift earlier I was very surprised. Had a Koso GPn-1 guage installed. I highly reccommend it. It's all one piece. Lights up bright blue with a digi speedo and regular tach. You program the tach to your shift preference and the light beeps to shift. It also has a gear indicator, tire pressure guage and engine heat as well. Best of all it records top speeds. does 0-60 1/4 mile and 0-100 runs whatever you want to do. It's great. I got mine for 299 they usually run 329 to 369. The gpxn2 is more expensive but not as pretty and doesn't do anything different it is just a different look which I don't like as much. Koso Is the way to go. I will put one on the triumph Daytona 675 I'm grabbing that's how awesome they are. It's essentially a mini computer

Very nice, definately want to see pics and any install tips you have when its all done.  If I've found the one your referring to I like it!  Does this price make sense, or did you get a better deal elsewhere?  This will be a fun winter project :)

I got the white one it lights up much better. They have to make a bracket it sits higher like a supersport. There was no price there but I found it for 329 online and my guy beat it and did it for 300 installed. Dynotunenitrous.com I think it's called had a sale on them google them a site similar to that should pop up and see what they are going for. 329-350 is a good price installed though.

This thing does everything you can think of. And is actuallly more compact then it looks.

A couple of notes about the SV650 speedometer sensor:

1st gen (not sure of the exact years) uses a 4-pole rotor and later gen uses an 8-pole rotor.  So whichever version you get, you will need to get the appropriate rotor. Physical dimensions are the same.  These are also used in the V-strom, one of the Burgmans, and a cruiser.

Now, the rotor is fragile!  I am about to replace the 2nd one!  I thought I had ham-fisted the front wheel install on the first one, so I was very careful the next time.  But when I recently took the wheel off for fork seal replacement, I find that it's broken again.  It is a common problem.  Google "sv650 speedometer problem" for lots of details.  Not too costly of a part, $25 IIRC.  I thought about having one made out of Delrin and I would press in some tiny magnets.  It looks like this:

The 'ears' go toward the wheel, the barrel goes toward the fork leg.  The bushing Dgyver was talking about goes in the center.
But would probably cost more and I'm not 100% sure it will work better.

So, SV650 riders like to upgrade the front with GSXR parts, so they have come up with a solution to the problem of no speed sensor on the GSXR front wheel as well as the fragile rotor problem.  They splice in a hall-effect sensor on the sensor wire going to the front wheel.  Then glue the appropriate number of magnets on the brake rotor carrier.  I think I may take this approach as well.

I broke one once myself - I'm pretty sure I didn't have it in correctly one time when I was re-installing my front wheel.  Lesson learned.

Over 33,xxx on the clock and that is the only break (so far).

I got my bike back. Not sure how to post pictures but i highly recommend the KOSO RX1N. Its one piece. Has a shift warning light when you are close to your limit and then a bright on that beeps when you are at the limit. does 0-60 1/4 mile times, lap times you name it. Thing is awesome. 330 installed. Could not be happier. The guy who installed it bought one for each of his bikes he likesi it so much.
