At this stage, I think the rest of the number will just give us an Idea of how many are getting made over the years.

E.g. my k9 has 153xxx, while I've seen an 07 with 137xxx, meaning 20,000 units in two years.

So I think the rest of your number would then probably be close to the 100,000 number. And it would be a curiosity to know. I'll pop back in later today after riding with an 2001 bike to see what number that is at and how close it is to the mystery number.

Couldn't do the 2001 bike's engine. Turns out it is a 2000 bike and the engine was swapped out last week. So who knows on that one and the rider doesn't care.

starwalt has done a similar analysis: http://www.vtxstar.com/GSpopcount.htm

It hasn't been updated in a few years, but is still interesting.

mines a 04 looks like he has a old one and thats about all we can tell, from the number scheme so far i would deduce the 100,000s is not a valid counting number just a place holder. from then you have to 10s of thousands of GS500s which seems like a more realistic number... so my bike would of been the 11 thousandth m504 produced.

I think we have a winner here, thecnd.

Baltimore GS has an 01 bike with a 12/00 build date.

Your engine number: M501-176216
His engine number: M501-176695

So your engine is from a bike build in 2000.

Mystery solved.

Thank you very much for your efforts in solving this question for me. At least I know what I am dealing with now.
