can anyone reccommend top box racks, i want to get a givi top box, do i need a givi rack? also any suggestions on top boxes would be appreciated.

I had a Suzuki luggage rack and added a Givi Monolock case to it using the base plate that comes with the Monolock cases, they will clamp to most any tubular rack.  If you get one of the more expensive Givi Monokey cases you will need to buy one of their base plates to mount it to a tubular rack or the Givi rack that comes with a choice of either type of base plate.  If I wanted to buy another rack I think I'd get the SW-Motec rack and use a Monolock case with included base plate.

When I've searched for racks for the GS500 bikes I always find more brands available on your side of the Atlantic than here so a good Google search might turn up something better available for you there.
