Where to purchase 1989 clip ons?

Hey,

I've been mulling over the thought of installing clip-ons and have decided that, if I can get them, the 1989 clip ons would be the best.

Is there any parts dealers that would carry them? Do you guys think the local Suzuki stealership would be able to order them? I figured if there's a good chance they would I'd call tomorrow and get a quote. It seems like a super easy install.

Also, the wiki says the clip ons will hit the horn button on the tank. However, I've read around and I haven't found anyone with a 2004+ GS500F with the 1989 clip ons installed that has this problem. Can anyone vouch for it?

The search function has turned up nothing in terms of places to buy them. Thanks guys!

buddha used a pipe bender and put a 5 degree bend on the clipons to keep them from hitting the tank. Look at your bars next time your on it, turn the bars all the way and you can see the overlap between the tank and the handle bar, its just high enough to miss it.

i have a 2004 with 89 clips and straight woodcraft bars. works perfect and feels great. bars/controls don't hit tank at all, though it is a little tight at full turn. it won't crush my thumb, but will squeeze it a little on each side. highly recommend it!

Hence why I want them. Where to buy them eludes me however :icon_sad:

yer looking for old stock parts, so craigslist and the gstwin FS section(part outs, or clip on specific threads) and ebay are the best places to start. in nothing shows up, keep an eye out for the next month or so and something will pop up

I ended up buying an '89 parts bike just to get that style handlebar set up.

Ive got this set up on my 09, awesome. Still wish it sat a bit lower though. I think once I get new springs Ill raise the forks through the triple a bit. I cut up a set of drag bars, they're straight, works perfect.

The true USA 1989's might be a little tight, but as others said they do work.
The one type of Canadian/European work just fine though they are close, too, but only on the right side. You can see photos on various threads of them on my 2009.
There is a second type of Canadian/European that only fit properly on the older tanks. You can scan threads and see photos showing the difference. (Comcast is failing tonight so don't have time to wait for it to locate the threads for you. maybe someone else can. Too slow tonight.)

I have a set of top tripple clip ons... somehow I lost one of the bars to them though...but it would be easy to replace. If you still cant find the 89s
89 engine-97 frame, 89 clips, Fenderectomy, Progressive front springs, CF Levers and bar ends,  Nelson-Rigg CL-450, Fieldsheer saddlebags, Led Indicators, Blue LED tach and speed, integrated mirrors, "rear blinker relocation" Corbin seat, Yosh exhaust, DynoJet stage 3

The clamp is the hard part, any 7/8 bar is gonna fit. vortex and woodcraft are good options and retail for (usually) 30 USD for the pair. Like I posted earlier I cut up a set of drag bars I had laying around... but Im cheap.

Here are some past topics that discussed the bars.
In one topic, that's where we discovered the difference between the USA 1989 ones and the other two types sold in Canada and Europe through 2000.

These should answer all questions you have about them.
As for where to get some? They show up on the board or ebay once in a while.

I guess I've lost my reputation as a parts whore. I'll dig into my parts bin and see how many extra sets I have. I know there are 10 sets of the clips that only fit the older tanks. Not a lot of top plates. A few each of the 89's and the other European ones that fit the new tanks. I'll have to see how many of the OEM bars are good. Some are bent or have a broken bar end screw (but that's fixable, don't know how to straighten a bar). So I guess if you can't locate any I probably can help out.

Still have some stuff to sort out. Looks like a few sets in this photo.

LSL makes a nice clip-on bar holder. I haven't used them, but they look really nice and clamp on below the triple so you don't have to fuggle with the fork position. But then for over $400 you could buy a parts bike.
