so i got the kit thats being circulated on the site and watched the video on how to but have a question.

I did an inventory of the shims in the box so i could easily pick out what i need but none in the box will work for me. so thats means i need to order some. thats no big deal but i need some help picking them out so i buy once and not twice.

These are what we have in the box. I measured each one and disregarded the numbers on them

2.40
2.44
2.60
2.62 x2
2.63
2.65 x2
2.68
2.69 x2
2.70
2.72 x4
2.74 x2
2.84

Now, for instance, my pass side intake (D) was a 2.65 that actually measured 2.62mm. The thinnest feeler gauge is 0.04mm and would not fit under my pass side intake lobe. So with really no options to choose from, i need to buy some.

So if 2.62 is too tight with a 0.04mm feeler, and the ideal number is 0.03 to 0.08mm, how do i determine what i need?

Looks like all replacement shims go in 0.05mm increments. Anyone got a site for them for less than $10 each?

OK...first thing and you have this correct is you go by the actual measurement, not the markings.....

You have a 2.62 which is too tight   but you don't know how much too tight because you can't measure...

Couple of things to try...

Go to the next size smaller  which would be 260 in your box.....Install and measure gap...If gap is Ok....03 ~ .08  you're done.......if still too thght...go to next smaller shaim....and measure again...etc....

Another was is to install a shim which is know to be way too small....like your...244  or 240...now measure the gap......it's gonna be way too big...but now you have an actual measurement...so you can do the math in one shot...........install the needed size...do final check...and done.......

check out my 3rd paragraph. i did measure each one and disregarded the numbers on them.

After 2.60 is 2.44 which im sure is too loose. Thus the reason for trying to understand the math on how to calculate what i need to order

however,  putting in the 2.44 and measuring the maximum gap, adding those two numbers together and then subtracting 0.03 to get somewhere in the middle of 0.03 to 0.08 might work

anyone else confirm?

Right...you measured.....that's correct way to do it.....

Let me try to explain another way..........

Right now you can't measure gap because your feeler is .04 and the gap is less than .04.....but there is no way to know HOW MUCH LESS THAN .04.

So for example say the gap is .01  (we dont know that, just an example)

So throw in the 244.......so now measure the gap...it should measure  around .18.....

desired gap is .03 ~.08

Math.......

.18 - .03 = .15      244 +.15 = 259  (tightest of the allowable range)

.18 - .08 = .10       244 + .10 = 254 (loosest of the allowable range)

So it looks like you need to order 260 and 255...........

I think you already have 260 in the box....try that and measure if .03 or greater you got it...

If still tight...go to 255...

Here's a link to the chart so you don't have to do math.......

http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/ValveAdjustmentVideo/GS500_Valve_Shim_Selection_Chart.pdf

Again...the idea is you can't measure a too tight gap....you can only measure a correct to too lwide gap........

So purposely put in a too small shim to get the meausrement of the gap.....then go to chart...and select correct shim size and order if you don't have already...

OK,  so for A, B and D I can actually swap around the shims and get the clearances I need. For C however I will need to order one.

There is a 2.40mm shim and if i use it I have 18mm of feeler guage clearance. Coincidentally if i use the 2.44mm shim i have 14mm of clearance so it's nice those numbers match.

So according to the chart I need either a 2.50 or a 2.55 shim so i guess I'll be ordering here in a few minutes. Which ever one i dont need ill throw in the kit for the next person.

the mole

There's a consensus around here from experienced GSers that for longer valve life and less frequent adjustment its good to set the exhaust clearances slightly wider than recommended, or at least at the wide end of the range.

cool.

I already bought some although i can buy more if needed.

I bought them for $6 each with free shipping  on ebay from this guy
