Shortly after buying my used GS, I had to jump it after I ran it out of gas once.  (I think previous owner didn't charge battery over winter).  I've heard that this can damage the bike...  I don't really follow since they're both 12v systems, and as such, shouldn't the GS draw the proper amount of current to not fry anything??...

The volts are the same, but the amps are higher in car electrical systems.  You can use a car to jump a motorcycle or other small engine (lawn mower, etc.) but just do it with the car turned off.

i jump regularly.

dont have the car running.. that battery is more than enough to start the bike.

Connect negative first, then positive for bike and then the car.. wait a few sec for it to charge and then fire away.

I get it...  The running car is actually charging the battery while it runs, hence the current.  Thanks for the tip, and I'm glad I didn't cook her the first time cause I definitely left the car running, just cause that's how I'm used to doing it with cars...

the car's alternator will fry the GS  :x

i jump my battery all the time because of the problems i've been having...just make sure the car engine is not running (not charging the battery)

Jake

I have never considered jumping - why not just pop the clutch?

O.K. my battery is flat again, too, but it simply would not bump start the last time I tried. I assumed this was because the electrical system needed some power at least.
IS there a guaranteed method if you're stranded somewhere, and forgot to pack a ski-jump ramp ? ;)

not to hijack this post but the first time i saw the title I thought you meant actually jumping the GS which would be funny as hell.

Although I have actually jumpd mine on one occasion, but i can say it was not intentional.

hijack over.

ive got a little charger that plugs into the wall.  When im going to be gone for a while i take the seat off and plug it into the wall.  It clamps to the battery and stops itself when it is a full charge.  ITs always ready to go.
