how important is it?...can i just skip it till the next big one?...
I'm currently very broke...and can't afford to service the bike...
but at the same time...I dont' want to do any permanant damage on it..

how important is it...can i just skip it?

just do an oil change.. cost about 10-20 bucks.

you wont need anything else.. lube your chain & adjust it. Do the oil change and maybe do a general once over...

4K is no biggie.

Edit: you can do these yourself.. Oil CHange instructions are on this site.. and in the repair manual.

I say about an hr to get all of it done.. maybe lesser. I can do an oil change in 15-20 minutes if i realy pushing it. Ideally i do wait for the engine to cool a bit before i take off the underside drain bolt.. or on a cold engine, turn iton, let it run for a minute or so.. and wait for it to cool and then drain.. but if your absolutely lazy like me .. just do a cold drain and refill..

Oil and filter and valve adjustment... Heck I do more in winter to summer transition... I switch to summer lights, The stock is summer, winter lights are those 80/100 super whites, lube cables and chain, air filetr clean and oil etc.

hey frost, you're already up to 6500 km on your bike?

Frost

LOL ya...i ride a lot...it had 3500km on it when i got it last month... :)

anyways...so not doing valve adjustments or carbs sync won't hurt the bike right?

i've already changed oil and adjusted chain....

i'll do a air filter rinse when i get the chance to...all these little things are easy and cost next to nothing...i'm just scared of the big maintainance services...

i havnet done valve adjustments and i am at 10K.. i did have pkasso check it.. but its still within spec.. i will do a valve adjustment someday in the future. JohNLA had his done at 16K miles.. so your good for the moment.

As for carb sync, that i needed due to some rather funny vibrations on my bike.. it got fixed by a carbsync. The carb sync is a lot easier than you think.. you can do it with a friend in about an hr or so.

You did the oil and filter change and you lubed the chain.. you are good to go.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

i just had my 4k checkup.  It cost me $100. Not bad but i honestly think it  sounded alot better afterwards.  Just change the oil and u should be fine.

Well the bike actually has far fewer components in its head than say a GSXR of the same vintage... (I am talking the vintage of the design of the engine... specifically the head... ok ok ok its 1989...) and a 89 GSXR has rocker arms actuated by the cam shafts and they have tiny little set screws pushing on the valve stem... Points of wear... cam, rocker bearing face, set screw tip, valve stem tip, and the valve seat and back of the valve face. On ours... cams against shims against valve stem tip and ofourse the valve seat and back of valve face... and that also had 3500 mile intervals... So I guess you are plenty safe in letting it slide... But checking might be a good caution anyway... If they were set tight at the factory.. on the tighter side of things you may have it tight... Loose... well if it got loose it will be a loud tapping racket you will easily hear.
