Burnout?

So I ordered a new rear tire for my GS, and was wondering if it was common practice to do one last burnout before putting the new tire on. I don't usually go around wasting my tires, but on my cars and trucks in the past when the tires are about bald I find it amusing to shed the remaining rubber in a smokey fashion. I was just wondering if people did that with motorcycles too.

Yeah squids do that.

But really, why ask us? You don't need our go ahead to do it or not do it.

In all the years I've been riding/driving I've never once felt the need to "do a burn out" just before a tire change.

If you do decide to do it, make sure you do it in your own driveway. Cause what right do you have to go to someone else's location and mark/damage their property? Doesn't matter if it's a carpark or back road somewhere, if it's not your property you have no right marking/damaging it.

I thought about it a couple of times but never did it---guess it's just the urge to get your money's worth out of it---to use it all up before ditching it.

What he means is burnouts are hard on the engine and transmission.  Even the best of bullet proof engines can blow up during a burnout.  I saw a video of a honda hornet shooting some part out through the side of the engine during a burnout.  Great for entertainment for the crowd....not so much for the owner.

If you keep the RPMs at a reasonable level you should have no problems with the engine, they usually don't keep it up long enough to overheat the engine. It's a stupid useless thing to do but it doesn't have to be a disaster. I think idiots that over rev their engines in neutral are far more likely to break things.

steezin_and_wheezin

haha not going to lie, i have tossed this idea around. haven't switch my tar out yet though

if i did do it- i wouldn't be burning it to the rim. wouldn't be slamming it in the reds. and i HIGHLY doubt i would post a clip to try and show how cool i was hahah it would be more for shits and giggles..

@norway - since when is it squid-ish to have a little fun on my moto? ;)

You're right Steezen, it wasn't the fact that he was doing a burnout, the same thing would have happened if he had taken off down the road and held it at redline ( probably deep into RL ) in first for that long. The only thing in a moderate *sensible burnout  that takes a beating is the rear tire.

* The only really sensible burnout would be to heat the tire for quarter mile times.

I guess I'm in the minority here but we usually end the larger stunt shows with a "burn it 'till it blows" display.

Wow.... watched that video. I don't think I will risk blowing up my bike. I also wasn't trying to be a "squid" or anything I was just wondering if people did stupid things like that. I live in rural kansas so burn outs are quite common around here lol.

i believe the  saying goes.... "hold my beer and watch this shaZam!" i live in SC last time i heard that we ended up in a ditch lol

mister

This is another reason why not http://youtu.be/emqvwB7sdWk - he almost drops the bike.

Quest: Do burnout
Result: Spend $$$ fixing fairings and other damage caused by dropping bike.

As I said, if you want to do it, do it on your own property - assuming you're paying it off cause renting still doesn't make it yours to mark/damage.

Otherwise, frankly, you are no different to any other vandal or graffiti cockhead.

i don't know mister, i wouldn't compare a skid mark on some tarmac with paint on a building/wall. i see where you are coming from though

and don't forget this one haha:

Good luck, you been warned. Doing a burnout on an aircooled isn't the best thing for it.

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

I can't believe nobody on this board enjoys a good burnout!  Have you no soul??  In the summer we have burn out competitions at the local fire company's car shows.  I love lighting the tires up on my old Camaro.  And like I said before, burn outs are a big part of stunt shows.  The crowd loves when you end with a nice tire roasting!  Here's some shots from the last stunt show at the Ocean City, Maryland Bike Week.
