My chain was hanging a little low, so I decided it's time to learn. Read how-to's online, watched some videos, pulled out my manual and got to work.

With the chain where I want it, my left side is only slightly past the first mark on my swingarm. On the exhaust/brake side, I can't get the adjuster that far forward, not past the second mark. I am also having trouble getting that plate snugged up to the swingarm. I feel like an idiot, and maybe like the last guy put too short a chain on. I can't get my left side past the second mark without the chain having zero slack.

The part that bugs me more than the chain, is I've redone this so many times and tried so many different things today, my wheel is definitely not aligned. Tried to get it all close and go for a ride -- scary. How do I align my rear wheel?

Loosen the bolts holding your rear brake caliper to your break arm. The reason it is easy to adjust everything on the left side but not the right is because the brake caliper isn't pivoting to accommodate the new wheel position. The caliper and brake arm are trying to pull the wheel back to where it was.

Loosen the sucker up so it's not fighting you. Once you have your wheel and chain how you like it, tighten everything up again.

I use something like this to align the rear wheel when adjusting the chain.  You use it to ensure the distance from the middle of the swing arm bolt to the middle of the rear axle is the same on both sides.  http://www.amazon.com/Rear-Wheel-Alignment-Harley-motorcycles/dp/B004ZGVXY2  I also place a screwdriver handle on top of the rear sprocket and under the chain then roll the tire backwards so the screwdriver is wedged between the sprocket and chain.  It helps to prevent the axle from moving when you tighten it up.  Once the axle bolt, adjusters on each side of the swing arm and brake arm are loosen the rear wheel should move fairly freely so the chain can be adjusted.  Another way to align the wheel is to use a straight edge - something like a yard stick.  Place the straight edge against the tire on the chain side of the wheel.  Make sure the straight edge is parallel with the chain.

Oh yea, it really is annoying when your chain's hanging low  .

But I LIKE doing videos! 

can make yourt own alignment tool. take a piece of STIFF wire and one zip tie. bendend of stiff wire. ( 1/16" or thereabouts) 90 degrees. attach zip tie to this. cut short after attachment. 90 degree end of wire goes either on pivot shaft or on rear axle. and ziptie goes opposite. you eyeball it then use hte tool. after setting tension. or at same time. i usually set tension first, then align. but i get alignment close , set tension, then finish alignment, then torque axle to spec
