I did 3 days of traveling this weekend of 120 miles a day. I enjoyed being on my bike and the weather was great. While I was riding I noticed that my speed was on average a steady 80mph. I started thinking will this hurt the bike?

So my question is, what is your highway speed?

jmelchio

I usually do somewhere between 60 and 75 mph on the highway. I doubt if doing 80 mph will hurt the bike. That's around 6500 rpm on a standard geared GS.

Don't know mph, but bike will sit at 6k rpm In 6th all day long. Of course, rider could do with a rest evey hour :-)  that's 120kph.

hmm...i didn't do anything to mine either..looks like one of us isn't stock LOL

actually

looks like you are one teeth up in the back/down in the front

NorwayGT1

idk if that chart is correct lol...

Big Rich

Just curious Norway- why? Because of the 140mph on the chart? If so, it was probably done on a dyno, where wind won't slow down the bike.

Norway, the chart is pretty accurate - accurate enough.

6th gear at 6k rpm is a tad above 120kph. Close to 80mph.

4th gear at 9k rpm is 140kph which is roughly 87.5mph and that's pretty close to what the chart shows. 4th gear at 4k rpm is 60kph (37mph) and is what the chart shows.

If your bike is not getting this and is doing 6,500rpm at only 65mph (104kph) in 6th gear then you do not have stock sprockets, or you're having a lot of clutch slippage on the go, or your speedo is all bugger to hell and is reading way way low, or you have a very small rear tire. My money is on sprockets not being stock.

At 65 and 6th gear you should be doing around 5k rpm, which is what the chart closely resembles.

Yeah at 100kph I'm sitting just above 5k. The bike itself should sit happy at any speed as long as the rider can stand it and it doesn't burn all it's oil up.

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Rayson,

cool chart, those specs show what my bike does and mine gears are stock. Good point to check the oil after all that running. I'll let you all know what I find.

I did get my bike up to 110mph but I began to get the wobbles in the handle bars so I backed it back down. Get bike though I need some music next time.

ill go count my teeth and let you know what i come up with...

I wonder if the previous owner of my bike put a 15 tooth on my front sprocket?  I've never actually checked and just assumed it was stock 16 tooth.  I've made several trips from Gainesville to Tampa and I could've sworn my 80 mph was closer to 7000 on the tach.  I'll check on the way home tonight.

I generally do 75-80 on the Interstate and felt the bike was kind of buzzy, especially at that RPM for 2 1/2 hours.  It got me thinking of switching over to a SV650 at some point in the future, but if it would probably be a little smoother at 6K.

NorwayGT1

alright well i just went for a ride and here is the update:

6th gear at 60-65 mph is at 5500 rpms.
70 it said 6500 or so
80 was 7000

saw 3 cops and went back to 55 mph speed limit lol

mister

Norway, you do not have stock sprockets. At 70 you should be around 5,500 as it shows on the chart and my stock bike agrees with.
