One last Jetting Question

I am about at the end of engine mods for my bike.  I currently have a Cobra slip on exhaust and the single K&N pod filters.  I went with the suggested jetting of 150/40/1 washer/and three turns out on the air/mixture.  I think that the bike is running very rich.  Have noticed very black spark plugs, light smoke coming out of pipe, and a lot of black sooty<sp?> stuff on the end of the bike. In the lower rpms the bike bogs slightly.  What do I need to do now?

try the mix screw at 2 turns out...octane did a dyno run and found that the bike has more power at 2 turns out on the mix screw...i'm gonna change my setting to 2 turns too

OK idle rich is air screw, you dont want it so rich that it stalls once it gets hot. You want it to idle at 1100 or so cold and hot. Going up to 1200 when hot from a 1100 cold idle means you are a little lean. Dropping to 1000 when hot from 1100 cold is rich.... Rich everywhere else is fine... in fact that's the idea... Just be sure its doesn't show problems when opening throttle.

When you're warming up your bike, what would your 'cold idle' point be?  Like after 2 or 5 minutes riding, rather than in the middle of a good ride for 'hot'?  My bike starts up a lot quicker now that I have the ignition advancer, but still needs choke for a bit.  So... for most of us, it'll look like our bikes are running lean since idle rpm goes up as the bike warms up (and this would be natural or else you'd never need choke)

OK idle after 2-3 mins of choking... when its about ready to hold a steady idle... without fear of dying... Hot idle is after 20 mins of riding... Hot should be as close as possible to cold but should still be greater than cold... and it should be set on the coldest day of the year. How is that for being precise. Remember you are jetting for good running under all weather conditions... It wont make the most power neccesarily except on the coldest day ... in effect the coldest day in canada... cos the 150's were decided upon by me in winter in canada. Lean makes power... atleast to a certain extent. But it is miserable to ride it that way when cold. Year round good running... = mildly rich... or about right on the coldest day around...
