Clip-ons or underneath exhaust?

How can i put clip-ons on my GS?  :dunno: I'm looking at replacing the handlebars and might like clip-ons instead of the regular bars. If not, where can i get a selection of bars that will fit a GS? :dunno:
Also, would it be possible to mount the muffler under the bike, kind of like the Buell XB9S? Would it fit or would it scrape all the time? :dunno: I think that would be pretty cool. Any words of wisdom from the board?

Good things come to those who wait.
Great things come to those who go get them.

to make clip-ons fit you have to move the headlight and the bracket...kind of complicated....you can get srinath's handlebars for cheap....much cheaper than sm handlebars

Clip-ons are pretty readily available... you just need to find 37mm... MY ADVICE... if you plan to ride this bike on the street - don't get clip ons unless you have an '89.  The riding position will kill you after a few miles in the saddle...or you can get the needed parts from an '89 and switch over from there.  You could locate a nice set of clubman bars, they put your hands in roughly the same position as the clip-ons would...

As far as the exhaust... a few of us have looked into this a bit.  Right now, I've built a small exhaust "box" based somewhat on a cutaway view of an underbike exhaust.  Right now I only need to figure out who to mount it (wouldn't be TOO hard) and then get an extra set of header pipes to cut up and stuff into the "box" (No way I'm using my headers - I need 'em...).  I figure in a month or so I'll have the thing finished and then I can start working on other little issues, like cleaning up my welds, mounting, and jetting.   Oh yeah - I'll REALLY miss my center stand!!!

Oh yeah, in order to ensure that the "box" doesn't hit the deck when I lean it over, I've had to bend it into a rather unattractive shape, but I'm thinking once it's done, I'll paint it with ultra-high-temp (1200degree) black so it really won't show up as much... also, draining oil.  I'm considering replacing the stock drain plug with one that will have a little extra "finger" on it so I could still turn it while the exhuast is mounted, and then have a little groove in the top of the exhaust box for the oil to just drain onto the box and then off the side.

Anyway... I'll let you know how it comes out... and keep in mind... you can pretty much build ANYTHING for the bike, you just need to be creative and patient!!!

Good luck...

So is it going to be under the seat exhaust?  I always thought those looked good, I was sad to see none for the GS

I plan to mount mine under the engine (ala Buell).  Underseat exhausts seems to take up too much space under there, plus you have to figure out a way to run a thick enough pipe up there without hitting anything.   Once I get my underbike exhaust worked out, I may give that one a try.

If anyone is wondering - I'm not really trying to make my GS better by trying different exhaust systems... I'm actually trying to figure out what it takes to build an exhaust so I could build them for other bikes.  I just happen to have a GS right now that I don't mind using as a guinea pig, so...  I've tried a high mount that worked out (other than a little lean jetting), a 2-into-2 system that blew itself open from a tiny stress fracture in one of the welds (gotta get that one back together and find some LIGHT cannisters to use...), my underbike exhaust (still in development), and then the "stocker" I normally run - a shorty reverse megaphone mounted higher than stock.  I removed the rear pegs so it sits about half way up where the rear peg holder would sit...
