Well... after taking the intake valves off the new head thinking they were simply way too dirty and crap buildup to close all the way.
it seems at Least one of them is slightly bent.
pretty hard to tell when I was looking at it tho.
Will check again but im not taking any chances.

Just going to go down and lap the new exhaust valve I bought into the old head and smooth out the slightly dinged up area on the head when the valve broke.
doesnt appear that it will cause problems.

Then take the head down to a harley shop near my dads on Tuesday and have them install the new valve since I do not own a spring compressor tool.

Pretty confident once that is done and back on, that she will be running again.  :thumb:

Plan to start her up once that is done but still have to take the top of the motor off again.

need new gaskets and I have the one below the cylinders being mailed out tomorrow, still have to buy the cylinder head gasket tho.

kk off to work on it!  :thumb:

UGH! quite frankly.... SICK of my endless Bad luck!!
especially with this engine!!

it ended on a good note tho, but still really ticked me off!!

Well....
the valve lapping tool was utterly USELESS for me!
dang thing just kept poppin off and wouldnt turn jack squat!

just took my needlenose vise grips on the top and spun it that way.

after a few times, just couldnt seem to get rid of a lil light shining thru the exhaust valve on my old head when lapping it.....

took a smoke break and said the heck with it.
took the exhaust valves out of the other head and seen how flush that one was.
Not a spec of light  :thumb:

okay...
took the other one out and tried that, no light!  :thumb:

so the new used head I got came in handy even tho the intake valves were bent (exhaust valves were not)

also, the brand new exhaust valve I bought wasnt even the correct one!
25% smaller bottom head......

ended on a good note, as its all ready for the exhaust valves to be reinstalled.

but pretty ticked i wasted money buying that valve lapping tool, valve grinding compound, and the useless new exhaust valve....

sick of things not going smoothly.
and quite frankly, if this sucker doesnt shape up, its Going to ship Out!

"also, the brand new exhaust valve I bought wasnt even the correct one!"
-this is the kind of stuff that makes you want to take it out in the backyard, douse it with gas and set it all on fiiii-rrre!

I'm sorry about the valves in that head.  I never took off the painter's tape or the paper towels the po had put over the valves.  I hope you don't give up Tomb.  You're really close to getting it up and running!

Not giving up.
if bad luck wants a fight, its going to F'in Lose! (no freakin joke!)

well, it got a few licks in this morning....

my old cylinder head is pretty much shot, unless I take it to a machine shop.
but why would I do that with a perfectly good extra head downstairs?
would of had the valves in but the guy at the shop noticed the one side where the valve broke, it dinged up the valve seat on the bottom.
I didnt see it until he pointed it out....

Soooooo!
Now I have to get the exhaust valves put Back into the other head.
then take out my intake valves from my old head and have those put in the new head as well.....

OYE!
I tell ya... I've had just about enough!
and yes I woulda just lit the sum b!tch on FIRE if it wasnt for so many people who I personally know and those on here who keep pushin me to keep goin.
also alot who are more enthused to see it finished then I am at this point hahaha  :cookoo:

count me in that group!!
Can you do the valve swap yourself?  A spring compressor isn't that big of a deal to use.
Don't quit Tomb!  You're so close!

I would if I had the tool.
but all the local ones I found are pretty dang expensive.

I dont think it would be much at a machine shop for putting them in as it should only take no more then 20 mins.

(edit)
okay, just watched a few ways to install valves without a spring compressor.
seems easy enough (never is for me tho!) hahahaha
gonna go get that taken care of now.

yes it Somewhat was.
only at first because I couldnt get alot of force pushing down without the needle nose hurtin my hand.

So I got 2 done with the pliers pushing down.
and then I did the other 2 the way U take them out. (without a hammer and usin a screwdriver to push down with)
19mm socket, long @$$ screwdriver, set up the pins and pushed down hoping they set.
took a few tries but it was alot easier.

all 4 GOOD valves now into the head u gave me Cbr  :thumb:

but... OF COURSE!!!
the dang buckets wont go in worth $h!T!

so now since I do not have an oven...
gotta borrow the neighbors hair dryer and warm the sucker up to put them in.

im too aggravated right now to bother tho.
always has to be something else...

if they went in, i was going to fire that sucker up before work.
oh well, hopefully the buckets go in tomorrow and she purrs to life.

(edit)
and not a Spec if light shining thru any of the valves!  :thumb:
Now I just hope the buckets go in smoothly and do not mess up somehow.

another good note, noticed at least 3 different size shims out of the 8 buckets I have.
didnt check them all tho.
so hopefully if I have to adjust any, I will have the right size already to swap in.

(edit)
actually, im just going to take the head to work and set it on one of the heaters until its nice and warm.
then try to get them in.

got the buckets in.
ugh that was a pain in the butt!

just got out of work.
so when I get up, toss it on, make sure it cranks by hand and nothing is stuck like last time.
fire the b!tch up if all is smooth and take some compression tests.

cant put it together for good tho until the lower cylinder gasket comes and I get one for above the cylinders.
also going to hone the cylinders before it goes back together for good as well.

hopefully it all goes smoothly!  :thumb:

ITS ALIVE!!!! ALIVEEEEEE!!!     :woohoo:  :woohoo:  :woohoo:

Put the Good head cbr gave me with the good valves in it on the bike.
set the timing chain and she cranked by hand Just fine  :thumb:

tossed the carbs, airbox, tank, & exhaust on.

let some fuel get thru the lines while I put the exhaust on.

Pressed the button and she started Right up!!   :thumb:  :woohoo:

couldnt do a compression test, was enough of a oily mess already.
I only had the head cover on it and not bolted down.
also need new gaskets so oil was leaking.
so there was quite the bit of smoke once it started warming up from the oil on the engine and exhaust.

sounded Absolutely WONDERFUL tho!
Still going to do a compression test but honestly, it sounded better then it did before any of these problems!!
so Im pretty certain the compression numbers will be good.

HELL YEAH!   :woohoo:  :thumb:

(edit)
and thanks again cbr!
even tho I know one of the intake valves were bent.
you ended up savin my butt with this

def. glad I stopped by the salvage yard this morning after work.

Only $36 for a cylinder head gasket, which is usually $45+++ that I've been seeing if bought online and shipped to my house.

Almost time to finally take her out of the basement!  :thumb:

(edit)
almost forgot.
asked about Shim cost as well.
$4 a pop.

Still have to check my clearance tho.

Wont be a video (if at all) for quite some time.
Roommate with the Iphone is and has already moved out. (hes not sleepin here but theres still some of his things to take out)
So Quality photos or a video is Very iffy for awhile.

In the meantime...
Have to make due with my crappy phones pics.

and wont be anymore pics until I have the bike out of the cellar, washed off (its VERYYYYY dusty and dirty) and waxed.

which will be as soon as I get the last engine gasket in a week and the items to make the blinkers work properly.
as long as nothing goes wrong....

thankfully my rear tire is still Good enough to ride 45 mins to where im movin to.

hmm actually.
depending on the cost...
I can probably get a web cam for my laptop and take pics and a video that way.
if they arent too much (never bought one)

(edit)
$40, yeah I can spare that for one.

(edit)
did a valve check earlier.
left intake and right exhaust is tight.
other 2 are perfect.

got some work done today  :thumb:
nothing major until the cylinder head gasket arrives.

Cut the exhaust pipe about 6 inches shorter'ish, so my slip on fits.
and wow steezin, did u cut the stock muffler off with a butter knife? hahaha
started the cut where I can just saw away, spray the crap out of it with WD40 and the sucker cut very straight and smoothly, without even having to stop.
looks like you had some trouble steezin? haha

Lubed up the clutch and throttle cables finally.

and put the front stock pegs back on to transport it.

took the shims out of the 8 buckets I have (4 on the bike)
6 265's and 2 260s.
265s were in the intake
and 260s in the exhaust.

1 intake and 1 exhaust are tight.

probably going to get a 255 for the one tight exhaust
and toss the 260 from the exhaust into the tight intake that had the 265 in it.

which will be after I install the new gaskets.
then i'll let it run awhile to warm up, retorque everything and check the clearances again.

finally got some pics of the new rear brake light housing too.
dont mind the mess of a bike or work area atm hahaha

lights off

brake on
