Stall at highway speeds

For all you amateur mechanics, I got one for you:

About 3 months ago, I was cruising my '97 GS around 70-75 mph in top gear around 6K RPM when it started to behave as if it was running out of gas.  I pulled over, after it stalled and hit the starter button to have it rev to life like nothing.  I went on about my business and forgot about the whole thing until last weekend....

Same situation, only I had been riding for over 100 miles for the day already when it started to act as if it were out of gas.  I coasted to the shoulder and again was able to start it as if nothing.  I rode about 3 or 4 more miles and it happened again!  A couple of miles later, same thing, this time I was near a gas station so I pulled in, topped off and relaxed for awhile.  Again, the bike started like nothing only to die again and start..again.  This was the last time it happened on this outing, thankfully as I was still about 40 mi out of Austin, and my only buddy with a truck was at work...

Today, it happened once again, at the same speed - only this time I had only ridden about 10 miles for the day.

I had the carbs cleaned a couple thousand miles ago, and I suspect this is the problem again.  However, since it is acting like it is out of gas and starts so easily after it dies, I have my suspicions.  Could it be something as simple as vapor lock?  If so, how do I fix/prevent it?  Or, could it be something far more sinister?

Sorry for such a lengthy post, but I would like to hear some of y'all's ideas.....

Thanks!!

Yup,  Happend to me too for over a year until I found out that my floats were off.  :?     Take apart your carbs again and get some carb cleaner and blow out the T where the fuel enters the floats,  Also bend the float needle so the fuel level has to be higher before it closes off the fuel.

Try riding in prime too to see if you have a vaccume leak.

Same thing happened to me. :x Turned out the diaphragm in the fuel petcock was faulty. I'd bypass the petcock or run it on prime to see if that makes any difference before cracking open the carbs.

This happens to me any time i drive highway speed for a little while and the gas tank is  not totally fulll.  I switch to prime and it runs fine.  Not enough gas flows otherwise at highway speed.

Next time it starts to happen just immedietly switch to prime.

This happens to me sometimes too, but I don't think it is a normal behavior.  There has got to be a way to fix it.

Great news! I just saved a bundle on car insurance by switching to a motorcycle!

I neglected to mention that usually topping off the tank helps.  However, last time out it didn't help.

Thanks for the input guys.  I hope it helps!  I will try anything before tackling those carbs!

Its the POS fuel select petcock.  You will notice that Suzuki has a new designed one on the "F" (finally).

Can he just replace the fuel petcock if it's faulty then?  I'm not sure how that thing works.

ASLAM.

Sure can. That's what I did. The Suzuki part is expensive.

Scroll down to the bottom on the page. You can get these at Lowe's for about $7.00. I've been running one for quite some time.  :thumb:

Ratzo, that seemed to fix the problem then?  I am going to give that a shot.  Also, thanks for the links to the other posts, there is some great things there.  Seems like this is a relativly common problem for the GS with an easy fix.  I sure am glad I gstwins.com exists!  I would have taken it to the shop and spent a fortune on something I could've fixed myself!  Thanks for all the help, y'all.  This will be my weekend project...I will let you know if it fixed the problem.

Yup. I wasn't too sure the petcock would have enough fuel flow for freeway running, but I haven't had any problems at all. The only bad thing is there's no Reserve. No biggie if you know what your range is and don't push it.

I always switch to prime when I hit my freeway on ramp.  Then when I'm in my lane and flowing with traffic, I switch back to RRI.

Otherwise, when I'm on the gas, I feel like it wants to run the float bowls empty.

Gonna have to fix that one of these days.
