Great morning so far  :thumb:

Nice paycheck with all the OT I had.

Stopped at the salvage yard, gasket wasnt in yet but I grabbed the shims I needed at only $2 a pop.
Stopped at Harbor Freight for some needed tools, including the cylinder honing tool.

then as soon as I sat down at home finally, salvage yard calls.
my gasket came in  :thumb:

Now to eat my BK, relax for about an hr, then go down and get this sucker goin finally!

(edit)
or to relax for a few hours hahaha  :cookoo:
Got preoccupied killin zombies  :woohoo:  hahaha im a big zombie nut!

Now I go pay homage to the throne and go get this PITA together.

Well, no more leaks...

but a few problems.
gotta readjust the tach cable. (isnt picking up smoothly)
and because of that, cant get the idle set right.

plugs were pretty darn Black after I ran it for a good few mins. (had to play with the throttle tho to keep her goin)

the shims I got were wrong, just a Little smaller then ones needed.
they can move back and forth when placed in the buckets... Big no no!
I dont need a shim flying out into the engine somehow (my luck)

and the compression test shows 90 on both sides.
but oddly enough, its not acting like its got low compression.
starts up and runs just fine.

so far it just seems like I have to get the fuel intake situated correctly.

dunno, too much in one day and its time for bed.

They are probably 29mm Yamaha shims.

Yea I will be taking them back later today when they open and hope they have the correct ones.

as for the bike.
Gonna get the fuel mixture taken care of.
The carbs are fine, as far as float level and internal parts go.
Probably going to take out the 130 main jets and put the 127.5s in at 2.5 turns out and see how that goes.

also get the tach cable situated so its smooth enough for me to See whats going on with it.

Not sure if this Coulda been the problem, but the plugs were not Tight all the way.
they were only hand tight and only slightly at that.

I honestly dont feel those compression numbers are right tho.
90 on both just didnt seem right.
It doesnt act AT ALL like its getting low compression, or sound it what so ever!
Im going to have to make sure im reading the gauge right and doing the test correctly.

which would be, both plugs taken out
plug the compressor in the one side.
open the throttle all the way and crank it until the numbers stop raising.

doing it that way, both jumped up pretty darn quickly to 90 and stayed there.

dunno...
Just know if this darn thing gives me anymore Bad problems other then a simple fuel mixture problem.
Im honestly going to consider just replacing the whole dang motor.

I'll update later on today when I finally get back down to it.
gonna relax until the salvage yard opens, then head up to hopefully get the right shims.

then head back down and work on it.

also get some fresher gas as well.

Double check your timing marks when you replace the shims, being off one tooth may cause the compression to be low.  Also try putting a teaspoon of oil in the spark plug hole, if you honed the cylinders and replaced the rings they may not be seated yet.

Tombstones81

99% certain the timing is set right. (right now anyways)
always will be after the trouble i've had with this motor...

and after some reading, the low compression is possibly from the 2 tight valves.
Intake on the left Cyl
Exhaust on the right.

couldnt even get a .004 into it. (or .04, whichever the hell it was, I used the right one, just forget how many 0's are there) haha
other 2 are good tho.

Is the motor good & hot when you check compression?
83 GR650 (riding / rolling project)

It's opener there in the wide open air...

Tombstones81

yeah that was the last thing I checked yesterday when I got done.

I ran the motor enough to warm up nicely first.
Mostly to burn off all the oil that leaked from the previously bad gaskets I had. (was just seeing if it would start)
Also to loosen up the motor bolts to be retightened.

I honestly dont feel its anything to do with the internal work i've done so far.

I mean, if its truly that low of a compression number.
I dont think it would be sounding and running nicely.
Minus the fuel problems tho (too rich atm, because the plugs were BLACK!)

I just hope the salvage yard has the correct shims.
I Really need this taken care of ASAP for other reasons, not just wanting it done.

Just a small update.

Went to every single dealer that deals with Suzuki's in the area and then some.
Not a single one had shims for my bike.
even the salvage yard had none.

So I ordered what I needed online and they will arrive in probably a week.

In the meantime, bike is totally on hold.

Gotta pack up my parts, tools, and then get someone to help me take the bike out of the cellar.\
Pack up my things and the bike in the back of a Uhaul and move.

Then get stuck working on the bike outside in the cold

hopefully all I need to do is put the shims in, and get the fuel mixture sorted out if it needs it.

after that, it will be only minor tinkering.
so I wont be freezin my butt off :)

so thats it for progress until at Least when the shims arrive.

not sure exactly tho as I am going to be VERY busy after I move.
off topic but a lil of the situation im in and my current and previous plans.

Was sharing a place with my nephew.
planned to ""Finish"" my bike up and then save a few grand and move on my own. (initial past plan)
2nd or 3rd week into Jan. I get a text from my nephew omw to work.
that he is paying the bills until the end of Feb and be moved out before then.

So now with Nothing saved up.
I am forced to go through with another option that I have been contemplating for some time now.
Move back in with my mother as her and my sis cant fully take care of a single house on their own.
my moms getting old (almost 70)
and my sis is a lil slow and a few years ago went through a Very bad breast cancer battle.

So the house is in DIRE need of a TONNNNNNNNNN of work!! and i mean TON! hahaha
So instead of paying rent.
I will be fixing up pretty much the Entire house!
New flooring, wallpaper, paint, wall paneling, kitchen cabinets.
Redo the entire bathroom, including either adding a shower to the cast iron tub or just install a shower and toss the tub.
Plumbing.
Some electrical.
Carpeting.
Doors.
Redo the back porch and paint the new front porch.
New fencing around the yard after I rip the probably 60+ year old one out.

But first, spend like $500+ on a pretty large dumpster to clean every single useless thing out of the house.
which was supposed to go towards my bikes headlight fairing and belly pan....

Most likely missing a few things, but thats the jist of it.

Going to be a Ton of fun! lol  :cookoo:

which is funny....
Its actually all thanks to the enjoyment I've gotten from working on my bike.
All the work I've done on it has been fun and Im one to Really appreciate hard work when it all comes together.
So its been pretty motivating for me.
...crazy!

so much for a small update... hahahaha  :cookoo:

maybe I'll make an off topic thread of that work... hahaha

thats just for the windscreen.

and I didnt plan on spending $500 total on them.

I just planned to spend what was needed out of $500 from my income tax.
which included the fairing and bellypan.

and put the rest towards bills and away.

Tomb maybe you can build something while you are at it!  Join the likes of adidas with utopia bike garage space!  Maybe it's destiny!  heheh

haha I dont have That kind of money to build pretty much a garage.

just going to lay a foundation, then build a nice size tool shed on that to store and work in.
something with enough room for a shelf, work table and room to store 2 bikes and work on a 3rd.

btw I have No experience in any of this hahahaha
but I also didnt have any when I started working on my bike and look how thats turned out  :thumb:
motivation ftw!

on topic now.
think I might know why the bikes possibly runnin quite a bit rich.
when I took my cylinder head off, the exhaust valves had a little bit of light shining thru.
so I bet now that they are completely sealed, more fuel is being combusted now.
Just a theory going by what I've noticed tho.

we'll see when I put the 127.5 main jets back in vs the 130s in there now and go with 2.5 turns out (think its at that now)
float level and carb parts are 100% tho, so no worries there.

Buy direct from Gimbel - much cheaper. About $360+postage for both. WildHare doesn't show the headlight cowling anymore.
http://stores.ebay.com/bikeparts79/_i.html?_nkw=gs500&submit=Search&_sid=106826498

Been searching everywhere for a couple lost tail center pieces in black and I found a Gimbel headlight cowling in storage that I need to dispose of somehow. That black tail center will show up when I don't need it. It always works that way.

ninjeff

Gracious. This is an amazing build Twists, turns, victories, defeats.....it has it all.

It certainly is inspiring. And soul crushing. LOL.

On one hand, i egt excited "HEY I WANT TO DO THAT TOO!" Then the valve stuff happened and im like "uhhh.....i'd lose my mind!"

Keep at it dude. Its looking good and it'll be awesome when its done.
Where in PA are you located?

Tombstones81

haha thanks  :thumb:
yeah the valve was, is, and has been a real PITA!
but as long as its 100% fine when I change the shims in the tight valves, then I will be grateful for my mistake being a learning experience.
I am actually pretty darn confident it will be fine because as I said before, its just not showing any signs of anymore problems when it was running the other day.
and sure as heck not showin signs of low compression from anything else but tight valves.

and im in north east Pa, Taylor right now to be specific. (next to Scranton)
in a few days, Plymouth, right near Wilkes Barre.

you can see peoples location on their profiles if they actually update it.

and honestly, even from all the problems....
I still want to do another bike as soon as everything else I have on my plate is situated! hahahaha :cookoo:

It was like that for me too Tomb.  Finished my first one and got another, and another and then my GS came along.  I sometimes wonder if I like wrenching or riding more.  When you first crank the engine and it runs after you fixed it,.... :thumb:  Even now, I want to get another GS and do something fi when I finish my first one.  I also really want to stick with our great forum.  +1 on what ninjeff said too!

You guys scare me.  :cookoo:

I get so inspired from these build but i KNOW myself. I hate when Stuff doesnt work like i think it should Its a personality flaw, i agree.
But for me, i just want something to work and i'd lose my cool if i had the trials that you two have (i've read your thread too CBR).  It really is quite inspiring, but i know myself better.

Lucky for me, there is guys like you two out there roaming the earth to figure this stuff out so i dont have to. If the world relied on me we'd still be riding horses. LOL!
