Hi, I just found this wonderful website...
I just bought a 2003 GS 500 and was wondering if you guys can help me with decisions on some mods...

I'm looking for a windscreen, something sporty looking
what can i get? maybe the one from JCWhitney? the F-16?
what else can i get?

also, i was looking into a more aggressive riding style, so i was looking at the SM bars, but they are too expensive for me.
Does anyone know who else makes these kind of bars and will it fit a 03GS?

another question , is it possible to drag knees with the GS :mrgreen:

Givi makes some cool looking windscreens. The site below has pics of the various models they make.  I'm thinking about adding either the A750 or the A770 to my 94 GS

Also, try browsing the gallery of bike pics on this site. Many have windscreens, and often the make/type is listed below the pic.

As for dragging knees, it depends on how far you slide off the seat and hang out your knee.  I've read where some are doing this on their Sunday morning rides.  I say; touch a peg first and then worry about touching the knee?  

Until Kenny Roberts came along in the 1970s with Yamaha race bikes, the style for road racing was to keep the knees tucked in and the body centered on the bike.  Bikes weren't that fast, frames were weak and tires were poor.  A rider didn't want to do anything to upset forward motion.

In America, we had watched Roberts (as a kid) for a couple years developing this style of climbing off to keep the bike a little more vertical so as to be able to get on the trottle a little sooner exiting corners.  When he went to Europe, they had never seen this and he was critized at first. Of course it didn't take long until he was winning and others were hanging off too.  

Before leathers with built-in knee pads, Roberts used gray duct tape wrapped around his knees for skid protection.  

At the time, Europeans weren't familiar with its suitability for uses beyond patching ducts (at first, radiator hoses, any crack in anything, then on to the dogs broken leg and finally brain surgery - if someone required it.)  so in Europe, duct tape became known for a while as 'Kenny Roberts tape".

In America, we believe we can fix anything given a screw driver, a pair of pliers, some wire, a can of WD40 and some duct tape.  Right guys?

Yes. If you start dragging pegs, then you better raise them or hang off the bike more. Scrqpping hard parts is bad, very bad.

I found the dark-tinted F-15 screen to be a great looking and worthwhile addition. It did require a few adjustments to keep the wind-blast from being unbearably loud but once you find the right setting it makes highway speed riding more pleasant - especially here in Minnesota where April wind-chills can be a bit harsh.

did you look at the F-16??...are they good for wind protection??...i know that Ashman hates them...

talk to Srinath about the bars...he have ones similar to clip-ons...but dunno if it'll fit the 03 though...

In my first year of racing, I was so intent on getting my knee down that I actually blew turns and really hurt my lap times. I would say, now, I wish I had concentrated on racing and what I learned from Keith Code's Superbike School and his book "Twist Of The Wrist II" and less on getting my knee down; it slowed me down!
