hahaha dont sell yourself short jeff.
I am the same way with tinkering with anything.
My patience and boiling point are quite low when BS happens.

Im old enough to have learned what happens when I snap tho.
That and im more then obsessed with everything in motorcycles, dunno what it is about it all.
So when I go at it (wrenching or riding) I make a note to prepare myself instead of doing something stupid.
not always perfect tho hahaha!

its also funny everytime I think about it.
When I got the bike last May, I didnt have any experience riding or even wrenching at all. (minus 1 hr on a friends cbr and the safety course)
and now, Im pretty confident I can do anything with the bike minus some electrical and lower engine work because I am yet to have to dabble in it.

so dont sell yourself short.

oh and off topic.
finally remembered to look on FB at my friends bike that he let me ride on July 4th 2010.
NEVER even sat on a bike before then. (nobody around me had one)
and of course, never rode one obviously.

wasnt small or some piece o crap either.

he took me to the college parking lot he took his safety course at and taught me the basics.
after getting the clutch figured out (never used one even in a car before then)
I was riding around just fine in like 20 mins.

I still think he was pretty friggin crazy to let a first timer like me ride his baby.
Especially the meaning behind the money he used to buy it, which was very personal to him.

and heres the bike it was.

CBR600F's!  Love those bikes!!  Never should have sold my F3, looking forward to owning an '04-06 F4i.  That one is the '01-03 body style.  I always recommend those bikes to anyone looking for a friendly sport bike.  They have a decent amount of power but it is predictable and linear and they are surprisingly comfortable for a crotch rocket.

I guess everyone has their "things".
At 32 years old ive just settled on my distaste for tinkering with mechanical stuff. I LOVE mechanical stuff, but only when it works. So, i usually odn't mind paying some one smarter than me to figure it out.
Your willingness to just endlessly tinker is applauded.

I guess we all have our things though. For me, being a musician means that i'll sit for HOURS and HOURS tweaking one knob fractions of an inch to get "just the right tone" and it doesnt bother me a bit.

Anyway, back to the build! No sense chatting with us simple mortals. BUILD MY FRIEND! BUUUIIILLLLDD!

F4i, where's the drool emoticon? Maybe someday.  What a great bike to learn on though!

"sit for HOURS and HOURS tweaking one knob fractions of an inch to get "just the right tone"
wow on that ninjeff.  Funny how we all have our quirks that don't bother us at all!  I can sit all day and work on the GS.  Love it!

Tombstones81

haha yeah its a nice bike.
Im just not one for fairings.

still off topic tho, he had it painted somewhat recently.

on topic now tho.
Finally all moved in and cable guy just left, so internet is back up and runnin.

Got my shims in the mail yesterday and they are the right sizes.
Snowed yesterday but didnt stick.
Today is nice and sunny.

so I will be going out and tossing the new shims in and seeing if everything is good to go.

Ok just got done putting the new shims in.
clearances are all ok now.
but still low compression.

Going to fill the tank up with fresh gas and hook her up.

so I've had it....
she either Lives or she Dies... Period!

No more monkeying around the with valves or engine in general.

from here on, if it isnt an adjustment to the carbs or jets.
then she is Done.

Not to the scrap yard or to a new owner.
but covered until I either buy a new engine.
or for a VERY long time if I get something else.

I've Absolutely Had it with this PITA!

so hope she is good now or who knows....

,...waiting for first ride review,...how was it?  How'd it run?  Sound?  Power?  Compared to last time you rode it?

hahaha I freakin WISH!
its nice enough out to have gone for a ride.

same symptoms as before, and started as before too.

Low compression still but doesnt seem like it.
and still running too rich.

So im going to monkey with the carbs and toss my old 127.5 main jets in if I can find them vs the 130s in there now.
put the slip-on back on if I get that figured out and take it for a test ride.... if it even makes it that far.

Plugs were Black again.
but with the choke fully on, I had to keep a little bit of throttle on to keep it running.

thats it for today tho.
need a nap before work tonight.

if its not raining or snowing when I get home in the morning, i'll swap out the jets and monkey with the air/fuel screws.

(edit)
would of taken too long if she ran 100% to do everything needed to ride tho.

Yet to put the slip-on back on since I first took the exhaust off back in Nov.
would that be causing problems too??

also yet to set the chain tension and initially lube it.
(its been indoors and now covered so its fine)

and I still have to get the tach cable set right as its VERY slow to pick up the RPMs atm.
probably just needs adjustment behind the tachometer.

but these are the Last things on my list to do when its ready to ride. (engine wise)

(edited again)
okay I am a dumb@$$!!!!!
and thats putting it lightly!

hopefully now all it needs is some tweaking.......

First off, after even more reading...
I should disregard compression numbers after a rebuild.
Poured a lil oil down the plug hole and got better numbers.
not much as I got more oil on the engine then in the hole hahahaha

and the reason it was having issues staying started and being too rich.......
I had the dang idle screw opened up ALOTTTTTTT!!!!
and I mean ALOT! hahahahaha  :cookoo:  << indeed  :cookoo:  :cookoo:

Had the choke fully on and started tightening the idle screw.
after turn after turn after turn of the idle screw, she started acting as she should with the choke on.

Still going to put the 127.5 main jets back in as I found the baggy they are in.
at least until I get the open air filter if it needs them.

So tomorrow if its nice enough.
Finish up adjusting the carbs.
Put the slip-on back on before I even start it incase I get frustrated again.
Tighten up and lube the chain.
adjust the tach cable.

and if shes acting good, go for a test ride around the block  :thumb:

(edit)
not gonna bother bumping so an edit will do.

wanted to but didnt finish her up today.
was drizzling a little bit but I've been beat from moving.
So I just took a day for some R&R.
I did get everything together tho.
Now I just need to take it outside and finish the work up.

Tomorrow is supposed to be dry and sunny, so I will be Sure to finish everything up when I get home from work or wake up.

Off Mon and Tues.
and Mon is supposed to be sunny and 40 and Tues is supposed to be sunny and 50.
So I def. want to finish this up before then and hopefully be able to actually go for more then a test ride.

Yes I feel that way!
I was literally as close as I can get from putting the bike away for a VERYYYYYYYY long time, years+++!!!!
actually, unless it doesnt run right when I fix a new problem will be the final straw, but still close enough!

Im out there crankin and crankin and crankin and she would not start, sputter or Anything at all!!

Finally I really did give up, spat on her haha and went to go put her away for quite awhile.

pushed the bike back to the work area and did one last check.
figured she was being flooded from so much crankin.
so I went to drain the carbs......
unscrewed the screw and.... Nothing

No gas at all came out.....  :technical:  :2guns:

So I guess when I had the carbs upside down messin with the air/fuel screw. I got the floats stuck or something down there.
as the carbs are not getting any fuel.
and there is no pinch or clog in the lines, tank, either petcocks, or the filter.

Blew air down both lines and whatever fuel was in them spat out the carb drains as I left them open while I turned the throttle a few times and cranked it.

So tomorrow, I gotta take the crap off again and check the carbs......
also couldnt put the 127.5 jets in as One PITA screw is too tight to get off. (when I do, whenever, def going with allen heads)

got the slip-on back on good tho.
was all ready to go around the block for a test ride too......

Absolutely Furious and sick and tired of the BS!
that WENCH better start up tomorrow when I fix the carb problem and run like brand new!
or im seriously not even joking.
I have No problems putting that Wench away for a Very long time and saving for something else!

sorry, REALLY ticked off right now!

so!
we'll see tomorrow morning after work.

Just don't put a spoonful of sugar in the bike to cure these "hiccups".

Not to derail the thread, but I think you'll appreciate this story. I've been working on a Honda Trail 90 for a while now. Had half the bike apart working on it and had to have the entire top end rebuilt. Just kept running into one little set back after another (sound familiar?). Finally got everything back together and in spec....... just had to kick start it since it doesn't have an electric starter. Kick, kick, kick, kick, sweat, sweat, curse, kick, kick, kick, and still nothing. So I get the bright idea to pull the cover off the side of the crank and use a pneumatic drill to get it started. So I'm crouched down, running a drill on the crank, and messing with the choke/throttle/mixture screw in the other. BOOM!! Fires up!! I was so excited to hear the motor run for the first time I totally forgot about the side cover being off........it was spewing oil all over my feet for about 20 seconds before I realized it.......

hahahahahaha thats how I was when I first got mine started.
I forgot to put the front engine screw in (the one below the headers that goes from the cylinder section to the head)
Im sittin there warmin her up.... lalala....
look down, ummmm thats more oil then old gaskets should be letting out...
go to the front and shes squirtin away almost as the oil circulates. hahahahaha

kk too tired and miserable to go at it.
just cranky from working all night and being tired.

will go at it when I wake up, and hopefully finish the Wench off! haha

BOOOM! I blow the PIECE OF F'IN PITA Garbage UP!!!

nothin was stuck in the carbs.
something was just clogged.
I took those suckers Fully apart and cleaned the heck out of them!
blew air thru everything and it was all good.
put the 127.5 main jets in.
put it back together and then noticed I lost the one spring that opens both flaps at the same time.
luckily I found it in the grass.....

put everything back on and crank crank crank.....
GDAMM carbs are STILL bone dry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :technical:  :technical:  :technical:

checked the petcock..... its fine!
fuel is in the lines too.....

im stumped and WAYYYYY more ticked off then yesterday!!!

what the heck else could it be?
fuel is in the lines but Not going into the carbs.......

(edit)
and I sprayed carb cleaner all Over that sum B!tch as I cranked it and that did Nothing...

I guess tomorrow I will take them apart yet AGAIN!~ and clean them again.
but also take the petcock off the gas tank and check that.... even tho there is fuel in all the lines........

ugh broke til thurs and I've never needed a beer so bad! ...... wait nm got some liquor downstairs!
not much of a drinker but yes I am that ticked off!

Sounds like vapor lock?  Check your carb breather tube for blockage.  You are so close man...just relax and take things slow.  You will get it done.

It sucks to depend on fixing something like this for transportation.  My best advice is to expect it to never work.  Then when it does you can have fun with it.  Never fun to get frustrated with something you NEEDED to have done yesterday.
