replacing hand grips?!

how do you replace hand grips? my left one is loose... and i want to change it.. maybe both sides... but how do i take them off/?... and i like pantablo's idea of using the gsxr ones froma junkyard.. how do i take those off?
everybody looks sexy on a bike... until they take off their helmet..

if i'm not keeping the grips i cut them off with a razor blade.  Be careful of the throttle body on the right side.  IF i'm taking them off or puttin them on again when I switch bars I use hairspray.  It makes them slide on nice and smooth and then when it dries it holds them in place.   Been doing it for years, it's an old bmx trick.

I changed my grips about a year ago when I changed my bars.  I used a screwdriver and broke the grip on the clutch side loose, then pulled it off.  However, I had to cut the grip off the throttle side because there are a bunch of fins and groove on the throttle tube that makes the grip really hard to remove without cutting it.  When I put the new grips on, I used some handle bar grip adhesive that I bought from the bike shop.  It is slippery upon application so that the grip slides on more easily, and then it dries as an adhesive to hold the grip on.  The throttle tube was a problem for me.  I had to grind off all the raised areas on the tube so that my aftermarket grip would fit correctly.  It may have been possible to get the grip on the throttle tube without grinding it down, but I think it would have looked terrible.

Hmm... I just pulled my old ones off, cleaned the surface, then (with some good ole man power) slid my new ones on. Worked great, took about 3 minutes...

A useful trick is to shoot a little compressed air under the grip, usually makes them easy to get off.  A flat blade screwdriver can be run around the grip (but be careful about scratching the bars/throttle sleeve) to break any stubborn adhesive.  You can just roll the throttle grip back off the groove and pull it off no problem.

If your grip is loose just peel it off as described above, shoot some hairspray in the grip and slide it back on. The hairspray works same as grip adhesive, slippery to get it on and drys tacky (sounds familiar... :nana: )

Done this many a time. I find the easy way of getting them off is, getting a set of grips, and pulling it so you can spray WD40 underneath, and then they just slip off. Especially if you wanna keep the grips for the future, as spares. Then clean off the WD40 with a rag, and put a bit of petrol on the bar, and put the new gips on quick. The petrol acts as a lubricant, until it evaporates, and it'll not slide off ever when its dry. Mae sure you clean it all after, as you dont want you hands smelling of petrol!
