Pipes coming out of cylinders

I recently purchased a 2004 GS500F for $1800 and I'm currently in the process of fixing it up.   It has 11,300 miles on it.  The bike runs good, shifts and handles great.

It has the usual high idle problem.

I have a used Yoshi slip on from ebay, a K&N lunch box from Amazon and 22.5, 65 and 147.5 jets on order.  The lower plastics are off for repair.

Here are some pictures of my bike:

Changing the oil before a ride to the Smokys, I noticed a pipe coming out of the front of each cylinder:

Can someone tell me what they are for and the implications of them being cut and crimped as they are.  I suspect they are part of a removed emisions system.  The bike is in Tennessee is it a California bike?

I can't find diagrams with cylinders like these on the Internet.

I've learned a lot about the GS500 from this website an this message board.  Thanks

That's the think called the "PARE"? secondary air emissions stuff. They should be plugged or properly connected to the "canister".
You could pinch off and seal the tubes or get PARE block-off plates. Older engines have the ports but they are internally plugged up.

This is where I just removed them from a 2006 engine. Haven't pulled out the thing with the hoses yet - you see it sitting there. The block-off plates are now in place.

Looks like it was for the pair system (pulse secondary air) installed on Cali bikes.

Now I remember. It goes back to the air box. Standard on the newer GS500's.
The "canister" and some other stuff from the carbs is the Cali emissions stuff.

The PAIR stuff can be removed. Plug them up and be sure the air box hole is plugged up. Be sure where that hose #9 is connected is also plugged up.

I have the parts in my parts piles if you want to put it back the way it was.

Anyone know if it does anything for performance or is it just for emissions? Seems to just take dirty air from the cylinders and send it back into the airbox to get re-burnt.

He He he says bum. Gotta love typos.  :thumb:

Thanks for the info.  Looks like it adds weight to me.

The back of the front fender is all melted, warped and bubbly, needs to be replaced.  Think this PAIR system adds heat close to the fender causing it to melt?

I have the 04 also same yellow. There is the imprint in the cylinder head for the pair system but there has never been any thing bolted to it so it must be california only.
