Should I get an AfterMarket Air Filter?

Hello fellow GS Riders!

I've got a completely stock 2002 GS500 and I'm thinking about putting a new air filter on it. (K&N maybe??)  I've read that I'll have to have it rejetted if I do this.  I'm not mechanically inclined so I'll have the work done at the shop.  If this question has been asked before - forgive me I've just signed up to this site after stumbling across while looking for my answers!

So what I'm wondering is --

1. What is the best type of aftermarket filter to get?  (Please suggest a brand and type if possible)
2. Are other modifications I need to do for me to benefit from this aftermarket filter?  IE: Will I have to replace the stock muffler? I hope to not have to replace the stock muffler!
3. What would be the approximate cost of the filter?
4. What is the approximate cost of rejetting?  How many hours work is it?
5.  What type of improvement will this make? ie: Will there be improvements in performance or sound of the stock bike?

Thanks for any responses!  Cheers!

OK a K&N in the airbox comes with a restrictor... which will eliminate the re-jetting requirement. The stock air filter can be washed in gas and used a few times. Rejetting is ~ 1 to 2 hour work for an OK mech. Not too complicated just buy all the jets etc and start it and you'll be fine.
Cool.

I ordered the K&N filter - should have it on Saturday.

The dealership I took it to couldn't find a jet kit for a 2002 GS though.  I thought that was a bit strange because I've heard plenty of mention of rejetting on this site.  I'm in New Brunswick, Canada and the parts guy said that they may have different aftermarket parts available in the US.  That's the justification he gave for me hearing about it but them not being available.

Anybody know where I can get a jet kit from a Canadian source?

The Buddha

The 2002 rejet formula was with mikuni parts... not aftermarket... and the pre 01 rejet formula is also with mikuni parts. Jet kit... we dont need no steenkin jet kit.

How much did you have to give for the filter (US Cost?).  I am looking at getting one for an 01 and they should be relativly the same.  Let us know the performance effect that just the filter has over stock if you don't have it rejetted yet.
thanks

I bought the dropin K&N with restrictor awhile ago for about $45-$50 if I recall correctly.  You can find a little bit better, I hear.

Thanks for the extra info Srinath...  That makes sense then.  Would be nicer if I could get a kit.  The shop guys don't seem to be aware that you can DIY.  I told them I'd be interested if they could figure something out.   But I suspect I'll be using the K&N without rejetting.  I'll keep you posted on what performance gains I see - if any.

They're not going to get a chance to even look at it until Friday.  (I'm getting an oil change and scheduled maintenance)  But I'm hoping that the filter will be there by Friday and I'll have a chance to take a test ride this Saturday.

I guess I may have paid a bit more than you for the filter then... because it was about $74 CDN plus tax (15%) which according to http://www.xe.com converts to $64 USD.

Cheers!

The Buddha

OK the 01+'s dont have any jet kits available on the market, now people here have come up with a DIY jetting for it. You asking the shop to figure out a DIY I think is just asking for trouble. They screw up enough when the procedures are well written out and they have done it a 1000 times... so I think you should just tell them to leave it alone... or dig the jetting out from an older post on here or post and get it from here and give to them or just not touch it. But somehting like this... 1 bigger pilots 1 bigger mid range jets, and 1 washer under needle, apart form 3 turns on mix screw. I am talking form memory... so please make sure and then give it to them.
Cool.

Nothing to report on the filter yet.  When Saturday rolled around they had done the other routiine maintenance and the filter hadn't arrived yet.  I'll post again once it has arrived and I have it installed.

Cheers!

alright     wont the restricitor slow it down.... i want speed!!        how much improvement would i be lookign for?
when u come to a stop...  suck ur thumb

The Buddha

Yes Restrictor will reduce the flow to where its just like the paper filter. Bad for speed but will let you get by wihtout re jetting... Speed... OK other than the obvious... "buy a bigger bike"... a Lunch box K&N... that replaces the air box will be the best bet. That with pipe. Of course rejetting is a must... but that combo will make the bike into the fastest it can be... before you sart fitting differend headas and vlaves etc...
Cool.

im not going to even bother         too much money for such little gain

i dont see why people want their bikes to go like 180 and shaZam!

i will neverr go above 95 on the highway           dont want a speeding ticket         and dont want to be burried quite yet

gs500e's are perfectly fast for me          im only 16  so i feel like the shaZam! on a motorcyclle

The Buddha

Oh yea 16 and have a motorcycle... Have to beat the chicks off with a stick    eh... but the attitude is quite right though. You only want what you know you can handle. The GS for most people is never too little and never too much, and its tough as nails to boot.
Cool.

i got the gs when i was 16 also with the same attitude you have. nice choice for a first bike :thumb:
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

surferdude

Well - I had the filter installed... To my surprise the shop actually put it in for free for me.  It's not really a big job at all and I have been waiting a bit for it too.  Still - a nice surprise!

I don't know that it makes much of a difference in power.  I'd say that it does increase the power a bit but it could just be psychological.  It seems to have changed the sound of the bike slightly too.  You can hear the intake a bit more.   It seems to have a bit more power (more noticable over 6 thousand RPM) and I noticed that when I shift into 2nd it also seems to have a bit more "go" than before.

All in all I'm pleased with the upgrade.  It's a cheap and simple modification.  A whole lot cheaper than the new bikes I've been drooling over.

The Kawasaki ZX-6R is my current fav but I'm sure that will change.  I've ridden a friends Yamaha FZ1 (140+ HP) and that's way too much power!  I didn't even get out of 2nd gear on the highway with that thing!  I think the 600-750cc range would be more fun/nimble.

Cheers!

i put the k&n pod. (lunchbox) filter in, i had already punched&drilled exhaust, in carbs i used 140 mains and the 37.5 pilots, screws to 2.5 turns out. runs like a raped ape  paid $34 us for the filter and a total of $2 for the jets. didnt do anything with the needle
