A little true story
A few years back I used to play in a skittles team (NINE pins, not ten and much smaller ball played outdoors in south of England but indoors in some other places usually with copious quantities of beer involved) One of our best players, let's call him Dave was also excellent at several other games requiring ball-hand-eye coordination. He was not the brightest spark but a nice guy, he worked as a cleaner and was proud of it, his father would describe him as "a bit slow" until one day a medical professional corrected him, "Dave is a person with learning difficulties" - Did this make Dave feel any better? Did this achieve anything for anybody? somehow I doubt it.

A couple of weeks ago I went to see a show by Reginald D Hunter a black American stand-up comedian who has been based in UK for about 15 years. he opened the act by apologising for his persistent use of the word "Homeboyus Africanus" He said "It don't offend me but I know it offends middle-class white people"

Isn't P.C. a wonderful thing.

Yes I fully agree, people are too stupid nowadays, easily offended, and cant comprehend the main thing that comes out of peoples mouths.
Which would be, the person that uses a word, its defined by how they mean it to be.
NOT how ignorant morons make it out to be themselves by overhearing or being called it.

had a HUGE problem with that with my ex.
would Constantly take what I say and twist it into her own definition instead of asking what I meant if she was confused.
they're My words, I will use and define them as I dang well please 

and with that being said... haha

agreed. ive had women get offended EASILY. yet they were fine with calling a guy out on the same context, and its perfectly fine. which i always said, hey, whats good for the goose, is good for teh gander Eh?" or sounds a lil like the pot calling the kettle black.

Is the word retarded offensive to me?  By itself, no.  I reserve my decision as to whether something is offensive or not by the message, not the words chosen to convey that message.

Was watching a news bit today about a girl who has Tourettes syndrome (turns out she was nominated for a grammy for her song) and she was explaining how it hurt her when people would call her "retarded" and that the names was enough that if wasn't for her faith she would have killed herself because the words hurt so bad as a teenager! She was very bright but when she got stressed out had nervous tics and hand movements. Kinda why I think it is offensive.

I remember when abused as a kid I'd rather much had the physical abuse over the verbal abuse. Bruises go away but the hurtful things he said never went away.

Do we know why people with Tourettes syndrome only shout profanity? If a word is profane, it is a learned thing based on your language and culture.

We never hear them yell out "Your beautiful", "Happy", "Pretty".

What wires it to the language part of the brain that stores profanity?

i know a guy like this. a best friend of mine. he nicknamed himself twitch. hes an OTR truckdriver. and does well. when he gets stressed out his twiches will get a bit more intense. occasionally drops some Fbombs. not quiet ones. but rather loud. the word retarded i cannot find a good use for it. i had in hte past worked as a caregiver for a group of young guys all wiht mental issues. mainly they were, well retarded. but they were some of the sweetest people ive ever known. they were said when my health deteriorated and i had to go. ( a group home) but i promised id visit, and i do. we will sit and play cards, or board games, or hell even a ps3 or something.

Again, there is a world of difference between using a word to describe someone who has a deficiency, and using it to imply they are not worthy of the respect you would normally pay to another human being. And we all know the difference when we hear it.

Yeah, Mister try telling that to a 12 year old kid who's father constantly told them that they are either stupid or retarded, they will never grow up to be anything worth living, they are a waste upon the earth. No matter how "strong" you are you begin to believe it when you hear it over and over and over. Yeah, almost 20 years later I "know" those words are not an accurate representation of me but when someone uses the word to me my PTSD kicks in and all the "knowing" in the world doesn't help. It has taken years of help to get where I can sleep at night (he loved sleep deprivation as a form of punishment for me not getting straight A's) but when the stress levels are up and I start to make mistakes from the fatigue the words come right back. For example I accidentally sent my professor a rough draft of my midterm term paper that didn't get overwritten and got an F on it. I didn't sleep the whole night and all I could think about was how my father was right I was too dumb to be doing this. It took quite a few friends telling me otherwise and my professor telling me it was an honest mistake to let it go.

I know I'm sharing WTMI on the net but I don't care anymore you wanna know why it may offend some so here is a reason from my heart.
