You're probably getting a bit faster each time at least  ;)  Wouldn't hurt to check it with a straight edge to make sure nothing is warped.

Tomb I'm sure if they had a 'break your GS engine down and put it all back together' contest for the quickest time, you'd be the winner!

yes Im sure I would! hahahahahaa  :cookoo:

Well, back home now.
Time to put my filthy oily jeans back on and go at it yet Again!

Going to put the lower cylinder gasket back in that was there originally when I first took it apart.
Its been coated with the copper gasket spray and had plenty of time to dry.

Im more confident in that working then a brand new one.
we'll see.

But!
at least im in a better mood today and now even better yet!

2 days early  :thumb:

too bad it wont be here by the time I go outside to start the work.
or else I would put it on and take some pics.

hopefully everything is 100% and back together later so I can put it on.

no paint for it until Friday tho.

(edit)
actually I have to check.
I might have enough in the one can of red I have left for a single coat to start with and leave it cure until Friday and finish it off when I buy more.

took That long to take the whole top end off.
well about 15/20 mins cleaning up the oily mess.
gasket cant be reused if I wanted to.
crap was flaking off everywhere.

I torque'd it down correctly.
I guess I will make 100% sure those WRETCHED copper washers are not getting stuck and not allowing the bolts to fully tighten to the head.

and what took me so long yet again to take it apart, ugh i HATE those copper washers!!!!

taking a quick smoke break as its friggin Hot directly in the sun.

also to add, found out what scraped the other cylinders (the right cylinder) vertically.
the long circular whatever that goes thru the piston wasnt fully in all the way.
it was just a Teeny bit out.
pushed it in and its fine now.

kk back to work!

(edit)
and im confident I just didnt push it in all the way myself and thought I did.
and it didnt do that from a mishap with the bike.

got it back together.
same as usual, started up fine, went around the block just fine.

got back, still a slight leak in the same spot.

but, I dont give a funk!
going to go at it from the outside this time "for now"
and just put some liquid gasket on it and go for a ride today and see how it holds up.
I know its a Temporary fix, but I dont care!

im going to try it anyway, no matter what anyone tells me. (sorry im pretty fed up)
but not as much as before as its only slightly dripping now vs almost Pouring out before.

i'll do that as soon as it cools and ride it around locally for a few hours.
then tomorrow retorque the engine bolts and maybe that will do it.

Got the gimbel headlight cowl tho  :thumb:
Thanks adidas!

already did enough work for today tho.
so im just going to put it in the closet until Friday when I can begin painting it.

kk time to go get busy, wash up, then go for a ride.

(edit)
and everything is flat and straight.
and the mating surfaces were brand new clean when I got done with them!

so all thats left that I can come up with is run it for a few hours, then tomorrow tighten the bolts up again.

WAS going to take it for a nice ride.

got to the other side of town and looked down....
Oil all over the left side cover.

Leak got worse.

Might even be leaking from the middle rods that go up where u put the engine nut on.

i dont know.

but its time to throw in the friggin towel.

tomorrow, I will torque those bolts down as hard as i can just for the hell of it.

but that is the VERY LAST thing I will F'IN DO!

seriously, I am DONE touching that GDAMM bike!

props given for sticking it out so long but thats all she wrote!

I am either replacing the entire F'IN motor.
or getting an SV650!

I simply do not care anymore.
its taking ALL i have not to ghost ride the bike into a brick wall.

now to go out and have a few beers!

Actually how important is getting the correct amount of torque on those engine bolts?
My torque wrench is messed up so I'm most likely off on it
Thanks

The torque value is important but it is more important that the bolts are tightened equally so the load is spread out correctly.  If you are going to tighten them more without a torque wrench, mark the head of the bolt and turn each one the same amount.

Well, I guess I have to wait on a torque wrench now.

Its my last Possible thing I can come up with that is wrong.
That I was/am either tightening them too much or too loose before.
one or the other.
this time I think too tight.

If its not the torque, then I honestly have Absolutely No friggin idea what could possibly be wrong. (without considering a bad gasket)

I cleaned up the mating surfaces so nicely, I did not notice a single imperfection.
boss at work said maybe a crack (didnt see a single indication of one)

and the location of the leak

the initial leak that I notice is right below the area with the numbers/letters on it in the middle of the bottom of the cylinders.
but then I have to also consider, maybe its in the crevices beside the middle part where the engine rods (or whatever they are called) go up through the cylinders and head, where you put the nut on top and torque it down.

I just cant come up with any single thing except for a torque problem.

It was 100% fine before I broke the exhaust valve.
since then, I havnt done a single thing that could possibly cause a problem.
as far as running the bike that is.

I mean I dunno if I could mess anything up by over torquing those nuts.

seriously tho, I Really need some advice on all possibilities.
as im going nuts and if I get a working torque wrench and do it all 100% properly and it Still leaks....
then im going to go bonkers even worse!
because that will be my last possible cause of the problem.

One thing I am doing tho.
Pinching my pennies from here on out.
Seriously going to be on the lookout for a new motor.
and preferably a direct swap vs whatever changes with the newer ones.

that will be hard to find in this area tho.
at least going by the number of members in north east Pa (which is only me on the map thread)

I am ready to drive for a deal tho if it comes to it.
but I would prefer no more then a 3 hr drive.

we'll see how it goes.

and lastly.
I apologize for losing it yet again!

Hard work is supposed to pay off.
the hell with knowledge being the only reward!
I've put more time, effort, work, sweat, blood, and money into this project then literally Anything Ever before.
So the endless problems are just building and building and building the stress up, making my snapping point even worse then the last each time.

(edit)
here is an up close pic of where im talking about
was browsing motors on ebay.

its been leaking at first and the most from right below the plate with those numbers/letters.
but im also unsure if its leaking in the crevices on the sides of that plate as well. (where u see the rod going up to the left behind and just above the plate with the numbers and letters)

I'll be checking it even more when I wake up later.

not much room to stick my head in there to see.
i'll see what I can do later

that round thing that goes into the piston is the gudgeon/wrist pin. Did you replace the circlip that holds it on? They are full float pins, just pushing it in will not keep it there. It will come back out and destroy the cylinder walls.

Been thinking I probably want something other then a plain colored tank or a Suzuki sticker on the side.

Lightly browsing but never found anything I really liked.

Popped in my head when asking about paint in the general thread.

Going to have my nephew see if his friend can make me a custom sticker of

http://www.wickedjester.com/wickedjester_com_12.gif

or

http://www.wickedjester.com/wickedjester_com_24.gif

Wicked Jester makes up about 90% of my Tshirt wear. lol
Love the sayings and designs.

not sure how they will look tho.
if bad, will just toss them on my car windows or computer case.

(edit)
and maybe even

in the top front of the tank as well, if it wont be too much (too many decals that is)
, !

This is a pic that I took of my wife (the GS owner) about 2 yrs ago, love their stuff! :thumb:

tomb i could send you my dial torque wrench or get you a 'clicker' from work or we have new style digital torque adapters that you put on your regular ratchet too.

Happy to help, just let me know,...

you've helped More then enough Cbr! thanks   :thumb:

I'll just get one from auto zone for like $15 / $20.
Only problem is, after payin bills, im flat broke. haha

so im either heading out to borrow some money off my pops or waiting til Friday.

(edit)
well, no luck on the torque wrench I wanted.
went to hmm like 6 friggin stores!
Pep Boys had the one I wanted but not the right socket size.
if harbor freight doesnt have the one I want, i'll just buy that one and get an adapter.
heres the one I want as I had no luck with the other dial kind.

oh and actually, the leak is a blessing.
thanks dropitlow
No I did not replace that ring that holds it in.
it completely slipped my mind.

so then yes, it leaking again is a blessing as if it didnt... i would have kept riding and ROYALLY F'ed my cylinder up because of that missing ring.

oddly enough i am glad now that it didnt work out and still leaked.

so now sometime between tomorrow and Thursday.
I will take it apart again and put that ring back in the side of the piston.
then use the last brand new OEM gasket I have below the cylinders.
and use a torque wrench to 100% properly install everything back together.

then I am actually 100% certain it will be allllll good!

might pi$$ me off from time to time because I cant see what and how he sees but the lord plays some crazy games I tell ya!

cant believe im grateful for that leak now and for drops reminder  :thumb:

(edit)
nope harbor freight does not have the torque wrench I want that I posted a pic of above.
one more local auto parts store to stop in tomorrow.
if they dont have it, gotta get the one at pep boys and get an adapter.

dont forget to put some rags or shop towels under the pistons before attempting to put that little ring in. that ring can go flying at the worst moment.

hahaha that lesson as well has already been learned. (the hard way as always)
dropped one of the copper washers down the middle of the engine like 2 months ago.
had to get a new oil pan gasket.

so I will be def putting a towel below the piston

tnx tho :)

+1.  Good thing you caught that for him.  That's what you call a save!

Tombstones81

kk back home from work.
2nd store I stopped at within 2 miles of work omw home had the beam type torque wrench.
but only had 1/2 size, so I had to buy a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter like I would have if I went to pep boys.
Paid $4 more then I would have at pep boys cause its on sale there but I would have used more then that in gas going to that store vs simply omw home from work.

going to go pay homage to the toilet gods, then get that wench DONE today!

going to toss the pin back in the side of the piston.
clean the mating surfaces again and put my last new oem gasket in.
then CORRECTLY torque down the engine bolts this time!

Then there should be Absolutely No reason for it to leak!
as I cant find Anything else wrong with it.

If it does leak again.....
Then I honestly think a new motor is in store for me.

kk will update later, and hopefully its not full of &*^^@^@*&%*(#

Glad you found the tq wrench.  Do you think that's why you had that bad scratch in the other cylinders, because of that missing ring dropit mentioned?
