Well I will tell you guys the story, I hope that I dont get teased about it.  Im a new rider and have only been riding my Honda CB450S. So I have gotten used to the controls and handling of it.  So this weekend I finaly got the GS out of storage since it was so nice out side.  Its not saftied yet, all I know for sure is it needed a horn.  So I installed that and put the batt in and started her right up.  I have not done any of my mods yet so she is bone stock for the safety.  I decided to just take her around the block.  So I go around the street and need to turn around in my back lane.  As I was turing I slightly hit the front brake and I stopped right away.... not expecting this I fall over.  SOAB.  My CBs breaks are not the touchy at all, I was not used to the GS front break feel and shouldnt have hit the break while turning.
Long story short is  I scratched the engine, turn signal and mirror.  I also bent the break handle but it was easy to bend back.
Im just pissed at myself so I was woundering if anything stupid like that has happened to any of you guys either recent or in your past.
I do know what I did wrong so Im not looking to get bashed for it.  TRust me I feel bad enough.
So Anyone?

Dont anything wrong??.... well...... I've dropped my bike 10 times because I always used to forget to take the disc lock off of my front rotor before I'd pull out of a parking spot, dropped my bike when I took a turn too fast when it was 35 degrees out and my tires were still cold, had my bike on it's sidestand in the wrong direction of a slanted driveway and tipped my whole bike over when I pulled on a bungee strap trying to tie something to my back seat and had to ride 35+ minutes home with one footpeg, wasn't paying attention on my first bike and rode straight off the side of the road into a little ditch, and just this weekend I tried to ride up some stairs, for some reason stopped giving it gas 2/3rds of the way up, stalled and fell into a wall AND I tried to ride down this gravel hill off of a parking lot that was elevated about 3 feet above the road, got a little over confident and went too fast just to have my front wheel shoot off and then hit the ground first almost throwing me over the bars and giving me a headache the rest of the night. Those last two weren't on the GS haha.

I'd say don't worry about it, you're gonna do a LOT of dumb things in the future, you learn not to worry about them haha

We all do dumb things.  I knocked my bike over in the garage less then a week after painting it  :icon_rolleyes:

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!

steezin_and_wheezin

I'd never get smarter if i wasn't so damn dumb haha. I've been fortunate enough to have kept my bikes shinny side up, while riding. She's about tipped over a couple times when stalling out in tight parking turns, but i've managed to get my foot down in time.

I did leave the parts bike sitting on the center stand on my back porch/work area one day. The wind was gusting and hit it hard enough to blow it over on its side.. Coming home from work to the roommate telling me my bike is on its side(and been like that all day) wasn't a pleasing experience haha.

@ TT - HAHAH i got a kick out of reading your post! i have a feeling the deezer's going get me into a couple of those situations haha

Haha, yeah man, I've always taken good care of my riding gear, but get yourself some stuff you're not too worried about for the drz. The left side of my jacket is a little scuffed up because when I stalled out on the steps I brushed up against the brick wall to my side, haha. I also was doing donuts in some dirt 2 weeks ago, got tossed off and landed on the back of my head. Luckily it wasn't dirt, but I wouldn't want to be abusing a $600 arai with crap like that.

One other thing I remember that was pretty dumb... I was pulling off the left side engine cover to set my timing, didn't want to drain the oil so I just leaned the bike to the ride side and wedged a piece of wood between the floor and the frame like a make-shift kickstand and was sitting there thinking "this is awesome! you'd never be able to do this with a heavy street bike!". Two minutes later..... THUD! as the piece of wood fell out and the bike crashed over on the floor hahaha. Would've panicked if that had happened to a nice bike. I just picked it up and went on with my day. Ooooh, I put my bike back together once, forgot to hook up the fuel line, turn the gas on the tank and walked away, turned around a few seconds later to find a giant puddle of gas on the floor...

Ya tt, that was actually pretty funny.  Thanks, I needed to hear that Im not the only one out there.  There might even be people that have been riding for years that might fall. Anyone like that around here?  I guess the weird part is the more I hear the better I feel.  I hope that doesnt sound bad but its true.

Ride it a while and after you use the brakes a little, that surface rust/grit/dirt that developed while stored will wear smooth again and the brakes won't be as touchy.

Then, your newfound experience that they are touchy is the bigger part of the solution.  :icon_lol:

Kijona

Yep, been there done that.

Got a little over-zealous with the clutch on my KLR one time (even after going up 2 teeth from stock on the front sprocket) and flipped over backwards. It was right after I had started riding on the street and had never ridden anything bigger than a 250.

I also dropped the KLR trying to turn around on a hill.

I also dropped it when I got off of it without putting the sidestand down.

I also wrecked it in someone's front yard by trying to turn while going through pinestraw with mostly street-oriented tires (90/10).

We've all done it man, no biggie. Just pick'er up and ride on.

Yes, a supermoto in the mud will give you the same exact results haha

Let's not forget when a girl is cute and you say "yeah go ahead and sit on it", she tries to stand it up and it just keep right on going in the opposite direction.... hahaha. Man, why am I the only one who keeps throwing all of these out? I'm starting to feel bad now haha

BaltimoreGS

The vast majority of dents and dings on my bikes are from bonehead moves.  And most of them happened when I wasn't even riding the bikes.  I've dropped bikes shuffling them around the garage and in the driveway.  Just yesterday I scraped up the tank on my '01 GS when I was carelessly carrying a dirt bike tank and some tools into the garage.  Tonight a dropped my '96 DR while I was strapping it in the bed of the truck resulting in another dent in the tank.  Don't feel bad, we all do dumb things at times   ;)

Before i actually dropped it the other week in the dirt I came close to dropping it in a servo in dry concrete, my master cylinder was getting to the point of shitting my right off it was siezing and notchy. I was just at walking pace when I squeezed a little too hard and she stopped suddenly.Luckily I rescued it before things got embarrassing, but not the best impression to give a bloke your riding with for the first time up in the hills.
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Wow thanks guys for all the replies.  TT it sounds like there are alot out there but just dont want to reply.  It is embarrasing which is why I posted my dumbness.  People dont like talking about it.  I read your post to my GF and she laughted it was so funny.  Not that it happened just the way you typed it.  Cheers man.  Anyone else have a dumb tail to tell?

Happened to me a few months back. Had gone camping the mountains with friends. When it was time to leave, I started my bike up, went a few metres and saw a friend to whom I hadn't said the 'goodbyes'. I stopped to talk to him. Since the road had a slope, I lost my balance while being stationary and fell. :-/ Broke the front brake lever. Didn't help that I had to drive back 70km back through the mountains. I felt like a dork for the next 2 days.

Flux Maven

I have dropped my GS twice. Both times were less than 5mph doing tight turns. Once was on gravel and the other on wet grass. No harm done other than bending levers. I also put my 125 down twice. One time I was going down my dirt road and went around an S-curve and hit a fresh patch of loose gravel and low sided it. The other time I was Jumping it (that was the first mistake) and came down and hit a patch of mud or something and the rear end slid out and then caught and the bike flipped and flung me off. I stood up unscathed and said "Dayum that was stupid" and put the bike away.

I've only tipped over my little Honda 125m ATC, my wife tipped over my gs while trying to push it out of the three season porch, only scratched up the rear plastic up by the rear grab bar.  had a couple of close calls.

Dropped Flick the first day I owned him. Scuffed up his exhaust! Got it out of my system LOL. Then a year later I ran out of gas had the smart idea to not put the kickstand down and push! Not the smartest idea! Pavement uneven I lost my balance got my right ankle caught under the left side of the bike and was Flick's cushion on the way down. Only piece of gear I didn't have on that day? You guessed it boots! Tore 3 ligaments in my ankle was a very expensive lesson. $200 boots aren't so expensive when comparing them with a #2,000 ER bill, and about $8,000 in PT!

btw easiest way toright a moto. not facing it. turn away from it, squat down, put right hand under tank area grasping frame, put left had under tail section, then while lifting, start walking backwards. when bike is almost upright, slowly turn self around and grasp both hadlebars, and put kickstand down. i did this myself with a 2007 goldwing. i weigh maybe 145.

Ouch, sorry to hear that Mary.  I hope you are doign well now.  Thanks everyone for the posts.  I seem not to feel so bad anymore, its just that we all work very hard to have a great bike and it (or us) gets damaged from the unknowen. Keep em coming.  Maybe this can be rehab..lol.

This is kinda old but I have a good one. I was trail riding on my little ttr-125. I was following a friend that knew the area, he was on a 500 so he would take off and then wait for me. This was my first bike and I had been riding for awhile but still not great. anyway, we came into this field, he took off and jumped a few rocks, I was mostly watching him while redlining at 30mph. All of a sudden this huge hole came out of nowhere... Yes in a 100% open flat field, it just appeared... I didn't have enough time to do much so I gunned it thinking I might hit the other side and just bottom out the suspension. Dident work, the hole was big enough so the bike went in and i kept going forward on my face. thank god for all the motocross padding. I got back up pulled the bike out of the hole and kept going. I had a few other minor falls but not much. Just bought a 06 gs500f. First street bike so we shall see.  :woohoo:

BTW, I have 100's of snowmobile stories. I have been snowmobiling since I was 10, more time to do some stupid things. lol
