You need "pri" aka prime to fill carbs wihtout a vacuum... or wihtout runing engine... Cranking doesn't make enough vacuum to fill carbs beofre running out of cahrge in the battery. The reason the guys didn't tell you to fill up is cos they are morons. Anyway... if it runs now... make the oil check and it should be fine. 1.7 gal is reverve, you might have been able to access that in prime, and I think the last 1/2 gal or so... is accessible only when you tip the bike over.

Bikes come with dino, breakin oil from the factory.

Its possible the carbs got starved for fuel with the petcock set to "on", and they didn't have enough vac (or he didn't crank long enough, in res.
But that sounds fishy...

Hi-T

Yup... outta gas...

on an 01 I would typically get 200 miles before needing to refill.  I would usually refill with 3.5 gallons.  I bet you were a little low on gas.  There may be another problem but I say ride another 150 miles and refill and see where it puts you.

Briggs

It sounds like you ran the carbs completly dry of gas, then you switched to res. I think what you probably should of done was switch it to prime. Leave it sit for a couple of minutes then switch back to reserve. But who knows?

maybe the new TPS system on the bike is faulty or not adjusted correctly as it seems to be, apart from the oil cooler and faring to be the only new part on the bike and as most seem to think your problem is a little weird, most have not come across the problem so best to look at the new parts but let your dealer fix it, if its anything like a car you will need a multi meter and the correct spec reading to adjust it.
Although this is a pain in the ass for you dont be put off I have had mine about six months and its been rock solid and as I hated Suzuki before owning the GS it has help change my outlook now Suzuki is OK and getting better (pity the cant win a race to save there life except with Mat Maldin ,only an ozzy could make one win Tee Hee  )
Once the dealer has fixed your problem you should get years/miles of enjoyment out of it.  :thumb:    ;)

Vac sealing. I put a tank bag on my old CM400 and sealed off the gastank air vent. It runs then sputter sputter die. Let it sit and it gets some air in.

Not sure how the GS vents but they all have to.

My 99 GS vents in a few to many spots but new tank is on the way. Stupid rust.

It is not good enough to say that we are trying our best. We must succeed in doing what is necessary.

it's prolly the gas... when i bought my gs... i had no idea how to ride... so i spent about 3-4 hours in the parking lot trying to figure out how to ride a bike... well... after that i opened the tank and it was half way full and the sales person told me that the gas was about 3/4 full... so i went home... rode about 2 miles... i had to pull over to the side... and gas was out.... cuase it would shut off... after 10 mins... it's starts... but when i pull the throttle... it's shuts off...

thanks guys.  I've been talking to the good_guy so that's great!  The dealer is still lookin' at it.  I think the suspect something but haven't gotten around to it yet.  I hope I didn't break anything by starving the carbs or engine of fuel.

baldwin

Ok...thanks for all the help.  I got the bike back now.  They said that it was the pilot jets and they were clogged or dirty.  They said they usually burn off, but they cleaned it.  I'm not sure if they were BSing me or not.  They were nice though.  The tank is full now so how long should I ride before I go to reserve or fill up?

With an '04 model in CA, you should be getting 170 miles or so before hitting reserve.  Hold the bike upright and fill to the bottom of the filler neck.  Reset trip odometer.  The trip odometer is your fuel gauge.

Good luck with the new bike.

Rema1000

Clogged pilot jets on a brand new bike?  That doesn't sound right.  If a pilot was blocked, then I'd be suspicious that maybe the tank was not thoroughly rinsed before assembly.

Or else, they took apart the carbs and blew them out, and put them back together, and now it works, so they have to tell you something, and the pilot is a good educated guess.  But really, just disassembling the carbs, blowing-out and reassembling, can fix so many different things, that it can be hard to tell what was really the problem.  By the time you've drained tho float bowls to get ready to remove the carbs, you may have already fixed the problem.

How you makin' out?

I find that on my 17 liter (4.5gal) tank I have to switch to reserve after using about 10 liters (2.5gal).  So with 2 gal left I have to switch to reserve.  Having said that, your bike should still run on reserve unless there's nothing left.

Sorry, didn't realize there was a second page of posts.  Looks like you are going again.  Sounds like you maybe ran the float bowls dry.  Pity they can't give you enough gas to get home.

When my 04 ran out of gas on my trip home from the dealer, I could still see plently of gas in there, so I'm still trying to figure out where my reserve is suppose to kick in. The dealer didn't fill the tank (I think that might only be with cars in this area, cause this is my second new bike...yes, spoiled brat is in my name...and I don't recall them filling the tank on my frist bike) and failed to tell me that there wasn't gas in it anyway. That's when I layed it down trying to find the stupid reserve switch (of course it doesn't occur to me too look BEFORE getting on the bike).

So, I went for a 100 mile ride the other day. It was only suppose to be 50, but I missed a turn and it turned into a long, long ride. I did find that the seat is so much more comfortable than the little gz250. Wasn't sore at all except for whatever reason, the pressure from the bars made my hands go numb. But the point of this little story, I went to go fill up my tank after about 140, I was only down two gallons...so I'm sitting around 60-70 mpg. I'm psyched about that. I can finally garage my car and quit paying up the ass for insurance ($4K a year...sigh) and just putt around on the bike. I'm having a blast on it and hope to keep it for some time.

Summer's just around the corner!!
