motor was all good for not being able to test it in a frame :)

now sittin in the back of the suv while i relax at my bros.

azzy was a cool dude too!
def lookin forward to another person to ride with when I ride the bike out this way.

will update when I have everything installed
sweet! I'd keep that old engine for sure, lots of good useable parts in there still. Keep us updated, can't wait to see that thing going!

Tombstones81

yeah I plan to wrap up and store the old engine.

I just need to take the right side cover off for the new engine. (the small one with the emblem)

other then that, just need to change the oil, wash it down and install it.
paint is really sweet too compared to how mine was and how it was after I repainted it.

just needs a good scrubbing.

kk headed home today sometime in the next few hrs.
hopefully i can get the engine in before it gets dark out.

Back home.
Ride back wasnt pleasant......

Borrowed my dads jack to make taking out the old and in the new engine easier.

Was about dark out when I got home tho.
and my dad just Had to say just wait until tomorrow when its totally light out so you dont mess anything up.
So now other then my mood being down (personal reasons), I have to wait because since he said that and if I did try to work on it tonight...
Something Would happen! hahaha

So tomorrow if its not raining, everything will be installed (gimbel cowl too)
Just hope when I hit that start button, that she purrs like a kitten.
then rides a tiger  :thumb:

So, until tomorrow!
If everything is perfect... she will be DONE!

(edit)
actually.
If I remember.
I will take my camera out with me and film the first time I start the new motor when I put it in. (if it starts, im confident tho, seller was cool)
If it does, then I'll make the more detailed video of my work that I said I planned to do

(edit again)
Heck with it!
Since I need but not in the mood to get drunk.
Only one other thing makes me smile!.... BIKE WORK! hahaha

Heck with it! im going outside to probably only take the old motor out.
if it goes Overly smooth with a jack this time instead of my 2 mitts (taking the motor out), I might consider just going all the way!

hahahaha!
went smoothly so far.
old motors out and im just going over the new one.
atm the exhaust valves are .04 and Im pretty certain the intake were as well.

trying to find my whatever that measuring tool is called to measure the one shim that doesnt say what size it is.
Would like to get the exhaust valves a little looser.
havnt touched the intake yet to see what size they are.

only took the cover off because the tachometer plug that goes into the head is stuck.
So I was going to go at it from inside carefully, but figured I would check the valves too.

kk time to keep lookin for that sucker

(edit)
kk both intakes at .06 or .07 (dont have a .07 and .08 wont go in but .06 will)
exhausts are a little looser which is fine.

motor went in with Ease!
Head first and swing the rear end in, went in on the first try with my 2 mitts!

draining the oil while I hook the wiring back up.
spotted a lil bare spot on one of the wires.
so now im up here lookin for my electrical tape and then back at it!

(edit)
done for the night.

took the old motor out after disconnecting wires and taking things of I needed.
cleaned the new one up.
checked and adjusted the valves.
New motor in the bike.
Hooked up the wires.
drained then changed the oil and filter.
Put the stupid 16T stock sprocket on, the cover and adjusted the clutch cable.

Then said enough for the night.

gotta buy a new 15T front sprocket now ><
one from my 94 is too wide for this 89.

All I got left tomorrow is...
The carbs, cables and hoses.
tighten the chain slack.
put the exhaust on
Put the tank on and start her up!

if shes good.
bolt down the tank.
toss the plastics on.
and finish it off with the gimbel cowl :)

think thats all... freakin TIRED right now and cant think straight! hahaha
toss

congrats on the late night wrenching!!

i tried to finish unloading, but the rain picked up again. Today's forecast is nice and sunny, hope to see yer video of her starting up after work

Oh one thing i was thinking.. we need a video of you RIDING this bike!

the video of it running will be cool, but won't be pleasing as watching you grin from ear to ear while shifting some gears :thumb:
if yer binders ain't squeakin, you ain't tweakin!

hahahaha too bad it wont be very soon ><

its ALWAYS something... be it random crap or my own mistakes...

oil filter cap bolt snapped, the male part sticking out. (bottom one)
Was probably already partially weakened as I Hardly put any pressure on it and I hear... Snap!

didnt think it broke last night.

but yes she started ( sorry I was in a hurry as I WANTED to ride to work for the 1:30 training)

but started leaking oil on the bottom of the oil filter cover and I noticed it broken right at the meeting point ><

looks like that video of redoing them is going to come in handy ><

(edit)
kk back home from training at work.

she started Right up, with the exception of some white smoke quite a bit at first from sitting and the lil bit of oil down the plugs to make sure the rings were lubed.
Sounded just fine and the smoke quickly went away.
MIGHT be a very slight leak in the top of the cylinders but I have to check further and its nothing to be concerned at all about.

didnt do anything else tho, the second I seen the oil leak and noticed the bolt snapped I shut it off, checked it over (broken too far in to put another bolt on) and got ready to go to work for an hr.

actually REALLY freaked me out when I seen drops of oil on the ground.
"Somewhat" relieved it was only the oil filter cover and MY fault partially. (partially cause I didnt really torque it down a whole lot)

kk going to search for that video of replacing those snapped rods on the oil filter cover.
Be nice if it was simple and the rods could be screwed out easily and I can just take one from my old motor.
I'll check the video.
Luckily tho it snapped right flush with the cover, so I should have some room to grab it when I take the cover off.

and yeah I'll have a more detailed video of what I can all recall of what I did to it once everything is installed and its clean enough to shoot. hahaha
Then one of it riding if anyones around to hold my camera, or else i'll go to a big parking lot like most do.

hahaha I was afraid of ANY major leak!

ok, just watched that video of the broken oil filter studs repair.
got enough to grab the broken one with vice grips and get it out.
then im just going to put one in from my old engine if the threads are all ok on everything.

not brand spankin new but I honestly dont think its going to be a problem.

that video.

God I love this site!
you all kick @$$! hahaha

I gotta say this again...
I wouldnt have been able to do all this if it wasnt for this site and its members.
and this specific problem now, I would probably be spending the entire day researching on what to do.
but instead, now im getting my filthy oil covered pants back on and going to Get Er Done! hahahaha

(edit)
well that went quick and smoothly....
But... HAHAHAHA
I broke another one the same way ><
was barely even tightening it, fine fine WONT happen a 3rd time!

taking a break while the engine and exhaust cools enough to swap another one. hahaha

Okay!
2 friggin oil filter cover studs replaced!

engine is all good (so far)

but one problem now.
It idles and chokes perfectly fine.
but no matter when, if I give it throttle, it bogs and dies.
if I open it up normally or faster, it just bogs and dies.
Very slowly, RPMs will raise then it starts to bog and dies unless I release the throttle.
then it idles normally.

sounds like a carb problem.
everything prior was 100% ok.

gas cap open did nothing.
fuel is flowing to the carbs.
even tho i've almost hit the reserve point (fuel is Still flowing Fine)

carbs were a real WENCH to get on the engine boots tho.

is there any difference between 94 carbs and 89s?

hopefully its just the throttle cable.

oh yeah.
noticed something with the old engine tho when I had the oil filter cap off taking the studs out.
there is 2 allen head bolts in there.
the one was loose.
not entirely sure what those are for.
but that mighta been the cause of my leak???

dont care about that atm tho.

any input on the current problem is appreciated.
as for todays work, im done.
beat and I have work tonight.

(edit)
got 2 extra sets of engine side carb booties.
so I will swap those out since it was so hard to get the carbs on.

also need to do a compression test but it sounded and felt fine.

oh yeah.
can slightly loose exhaust valves cause this?
they were both at .04.
I cant recall Clearly what the one was, but I know the other one was at like .13 or .013 whatever it is

oh yeah.. (always forget $h!t) ><

Plugs are fine
sounds like your main jets are plugged tomb. If your 94 carbs were good, put them on. They should be identical.

Tombstones81

they are on.
I didnt buy the old carbs that were with the 89 current motor.

he had them and the wiring harness for sale with them but since I offered him much less then what he asked (only had that much), I only asked for what I needed.

I'll check them out when I take them off tomorrow to switch out those booties.

hopefully it is just a clog.
cause it wasnt being flooded when I would open the throttle and it would bog and die.
as the plugs were not wet and it didnt stank like gas.

kk, gotta head to work tho.

kk few updates even tho I posted in the general section.

Found the problem with the bike boggin and dieing when I hit the throttle, but hopefully the ONLY problem.
Top right cover on the carbs got cracked causing an air leak.
Since I do not have another one, I applied a nice layer of liquid cement glue to seal it to see if that fix's it. (waiting for it to dry atm)

and almost certain I found the cause of the oil leak in my previous engine...
my luck... AFTER I spend so much money going to Pitt for a new motor. hahaha
I dont care as if it is the cause, I now have 2 running engines <3

allen head bolt was Really loose in the oil filter location. (inside the motor)
Tightened it by hand a bit but then stopped so I can take a pic of it.

the left one

So the old oil leak was the allen bolt?  I may have read it wrong.  What was the leak from, on the old one?

no idea on what the bolts do, but if one was loose, I would assume it would cause a problem and the leak is the only problem atm with the old engine.

and it was leaking right in the back there where the arrows are pointing

Well, still troubleshooting....

one video posted on the general section and one failed to upload so im trying again...

but honestly, I have never been so close to considering either leaving it sit for good.
or taking that previous offer of near $2000 for the bike (if it isnt a joke)

so it better get up and running Very soon or I am not joking or simply venting this time.

So, your old engine, you figured out where the leak was and fixed?  It was running good except for leaking right?
And it looks so nice in that video Tomb.  I don't have sound, so didn't get to hear the expletives, darn!

Tombstones81

Im not sure if tightening that bolt down will fix the leak.
Honestly, now im doubtful as another member posted he was missing both of his and had no leaks.

and i am NOT swapping another engine.
I am actually getting SICK of working on this bike.

God has a sick sadistic sense of humor for entertainment!
Hard work DOESNT pay off!

going to have the guy who offered around $2K texted soon and see if he is still interested.
then if it doesnt get fixed as it is now and soon... Bye Bye!
