Front turn signal help needed: custom oem lens or aftermarket signal?

Ok. So here is where I am at:

I just installed the Lights4All brand LED tail, as well as rear LED turn signals. These work perfectly without issue. Pics:

I attempted to install front LED flushmount turn signals. They light up ok, but I am having what appears to be the usual LED relay issues. With the front LED flushmounts installed, they all light up (2 front signals, and 2 rear signals). Pics of one flushmount front signal:

I went to AutoZone, bought a new 2-pin flasher relay, installed it, and it does not work correctly still. I re-installed my OEM front signals for now to make it drivable and legal (since apparently our bikes can only handle 2 LED signals with the OEM flasher relay).

So, I am aware of how the flushmounts do not fit perfectly, and sometimes require custom cutting of the fairing. I am not too keen about cutting my fairing at this point, especially since I am not sold on the front mount signals.

My questions are:

1. Where can I buy the "smoked" OEM lens covers to swap out the orange/amber colored ones? Does doing this require a new bulb, or is the bulb inside already orange?

2. Is anyone running any aftermarket front signals that are NOT flushmounts? I feel like the flushmounts are really unsafe, and not visible enough for traffic to see it clearly. If so, suggestions for aftermarket signals? Also, if these aftermarket signals are LED, what is the correct flasher relay that I need?

You need the 2 diode modification. Current flows through the turn indicator lamp. LEDs need so little current it causes all of them to light up.

Smoked: on ebay lights4all. They include the orange bulbs. I have them on all my bikes.

I just looked at your photos again. It seems you DO have rear turn signals. They're so tiny I never saw them. If I was driving behind you, I do not think I would see them. Safety is about being visible. Micro-minature turn signals some think are cool. The two philosophies do not always go together: safety and cool.

I think smoke signals are sexy, cool and safe.

Thank you for the replies.

If I get the Lights4All brand Smoked front signals with included orange bulb, those will just be plug and plag - correct?

The diodes and all that seems a bit over my head at this point honestly. I would only need the diodes and new flasher relay if the front signals are also LED - correct?

The lenses replace  the orange ones on the stock turn signals. (FYI: Some year Suzuki added an extra bump on the turn signal lens mount. If you have that, simply cut it off.) I've put on 8 sets (that's 8 pair - 2 pair per bike - 4 bikes)

If all turn signals stock, you're  OK.

If you keep the rear as LED,probably OK but might get a faster flash. Faster flash is the "burnt out bulb" feature of flashers. Tells a driver they have a turn signal burnt out. It thinks that due to the lower load of the LEDs.

I can make a diode light harness if you want. For a few dollars I'd send you one with diodes then send me back yours. Diodes are OK with stock, LED or a mix. I could put in LEDs for the indicators, too for the cost of the LEDs.

Hi Adidasguy. Thanks again for the help. I have done a lot of searching online and this forum, but don't totally understand what you are talking about with the diodes and led lights you just referred to.

Can you explain a little more about what you are saying? Thanks.

The turn signal indicator is connected BETWEEN the left and right side. Current flows both ways through it. That's why with all LED signals, they all come on. LEDs don't need much current to come on. With current going through the indicator, it is enough to make them come on. Incandescent lights require much more current so the current going through the indicator is not enough to make them come on.

The 2 diodes eliminates that problem by separating the left and right side with the diodes.

by LEDs, I mean replacing all of the indicators with LEDs. Most of us do that. We also replace the gauge lights with LEDs. The indicators will appear brighter - reducing the problem of not being able to see them on a bright day.

wildcat333

Ok cool. How much approx would that cost if you sold that to me? Is it easy to install? Any soldering needed or not?

Also, I feel like I read somewhere that you somehow have an indicator telling you LEFT or RIGHT signal so you actually know what is blinking. Can you also comment about this?

I added 2 LEDs inside my fairing for left and right. also I duplicated the oil, neutral and high beam. Below those are a blue and a white LED. BLUE is when bike is ON. White is when bike is in ON or PARK. I can easily see that as I get off and remove the key - if I see it I accidentally turned the key too far. In the day, you rarely notice the headlamp running light or the tail light running light if you put the bike in PARK by mistake.

The bulb harness is a pull out one and shove the other one in. Replacing gauge lights is easy: pull out rubber socket and replace. If you have the gauges off to replace the indicators, might as well replace the gauge lights so you never have to do that again.
I'll figure up what it would cost in parts. Not much other than the LED cost.

Ok. Well question here. I understand the whole safety aspect of this. But... Where would one find non flushmount LED front signals that would work? I attempted to fit one of my current LED rear signals into the front just for fitment, but it would not fit, because the hole is too large to fit into. I'm just trying to get some more ideas and figure this out.

Your stock signals had a plastic thingy on the inside to help plug the hole so the mounting nut would work. Put that on the OUTSIDE then use another large washer on the inside. Your small signals should then be able to mount. Or just add a larger washer on the outside and leave the plastic thingy on the inside.

True, good idea about the plastic thing and washer.

Ok, so, just to talk this out again. If I get LED's for the fronts:

I will need:

1. LED FRONT SIGNALS.
2. FLASHER RELAY (link of correct flasher relay needed).
3. SOME SORT OF DIODE THING? (And this installs up front in the dash area).

Yes?

Sounds correct.

Ok. So, I am interested in installing the diode thing (but I don't want to add extra LED bulbs in my fairing like posted above).

Would you be able to give me detailed instructions about how to install the diode thing that I need? Basically pretend like I have no idea what I am doing, because I don't. If it looks like I can do it, I'd gladly order one of these from you.

Appreciate it! Cheers.

*** NEW WIRING DIAGRAM ***

The extra LEDs in the fairing were an addition of mine. Nothing to do with using LEDs in the indicators in place of incandescent bulbs.

* Remove the gauge bracket. Do not lose the washers and any clips on those 2 bolts.
* You should disconnect the speedo cable and if older, the tach cable.
* Pull out the 4 indicator bulbs. Grab the wires and wiggle them out.
* Unplug it from your harness and go to your work bench with 2 diodes, wire strippers, soldering iron and electrical tape. Shrink tubing if you have it.
* Study the wiring diagram and make the following cuts & solders
*** Cut the green and black wire to the high beam lamp.
*** Solder one end of each diode to the green and black as shown (the end without the white band). Use caution so you don't melt the diodes.
*** Twist the other end of the diodes together and solder to the green wire. NOTE: If you have shrink tubing, slip pieces on before soldering. If not, you can always wrap wires in tape.
*** Now scrape a little insulation from that black/white wire and solder the black wire there.
* You're done. Tape everything up so it doesn't short out and shrink the tubing if you used that.
* Connect to the wiring harness and test. If you replaced the lamps with T-5 LEDs (newer) or T-10 LEDs (older), you may need to turn some LEDs around as they are polarized. In backwards and they do not light up.
* Now put everything back in.

It will look like this. The black wire is soldered into the black/white wire but hard to see.

When put back in,it will be like this. Looks same as before.

@ Adidasguy. Thanks for the info and pics.

Now, everything you explained about the soldering LED's and such, is this something that you could wire and solder ahead of time for me, and sell to me? Then I could install this, then send you back my OEM/stock wireset? Is that what you said before?

Or, do I actually have to solder stuff and splice stuff myself? Wiring can confuse me sometimes.

Yes I can do it. I have extra light harnesses. PM me and we'll work it out.
