ok.. so i was riding to work today and i saw a guy on a bike getting on the freeway... i was about 50 feet behind him.. and he popped a wheelie on the on ramp just before entering the freeway.. i thought that was sooo bad@ss... i was wondering... does anybody know if its possible to do a wheelie with the gs? has anyone done it intentionally?... how hard is it?

That's bad@ss.  I wish I was that guy.

yes, i've done it, but with disastrous results. too much throttle, not enough control. but, make sure your engine is fully warmed up, and you're on a flat, smooth road with no cops around. hold the throttle so the tach hovers around 5-6K. let the clutch out a little, just enough to start moving, then dump it and hold on. hold the throttle, maybe give it a little more. but don't mash it.

that's NOT the technique i used to bust up my bike. but that's what i've inferred from the other guys talking. i've brought my wheel up a little as described above, didn't mean to, didn't dump the clutch fully, just lofted the front wheel.

other people, feel free to comment or change stuff, prove me right, prove me an idiot, whatever.
If you think you can, don't. Many things start with "I think I can," and end with "Ow!"

it looked so easy when he did it... i first saw him stand up on his pegs... then all of a sudden  i hear revving of engine and BAM hes up on one... so im guessing he just pulled the clutch... gave it a good amount of throttle and let the clutch go... but im sure its harder with a gs... i think he had a R1 or something with some power.. but definitely a super sport... but... has anyone done it before intentionally?

it was probly easy if he was on a 600SS bike. he can do a clutchless throttle wheelie, samething with a sv650. just getting on the throttle will raise the front up on most 600ss, litre bikes, etc..
No Guts!! No Glory!!
No such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people that ask questions.

Yup lots of displacement will wheelie at will, sometimes when you don't want it to.  Sometimes my YZF does little "bunnie hop" wheelies if I blip a little to much upshifting to 2nd.

The GS can wheelie, but you have to do some convincing to get the ol' girl to perform.  Its fairly easy in 1st from a near stop. I doubt you can get "power wheelies" out of a GS in higher gears...

Yeah, I saw the barna Vids, they were doing wheelies & Stoppies:

They're here under movies.

My front wheel caught air on my R6 in gears 1-4 just by hammering the throttle no need to hold the clutch. I'm a new rider so it was actually not fun as it was never intentional.  Is it even safe to try it on a GS? It sounds pretty technical with all this holding in the clutch business...
This is my signature.

For the love of god, new riders should not be riding R6's. I know you want the cool factor, but remember the DEATH Factor. :nono:  Those instances of unintentional wheelies mean you need to keep your throttle hand in check, and you need to have better control of the bike. Ride the GS a bit more before tooling the R6 around. That's how people die on 2 wheels. Please

as far as i can tell, we're just talking lofting the front wheel and not a true wheelie which means no, it's not all that technical or difficult.  10mph, 6000rpm, weight of the bars, pull clutch in, drop clutch.  simple.  the wheel will stay up any where from half a second to two or three.  anymore than that and it is difficult and technical.

I could do wheelies on my stock GS's but they were very hard, and therefore somewhat unstable.  The GS just isnt made to be a wheelie bike, but with some lower gearing, you could probably do some good ones.

I was able to do a few wheelies prior to the death and destruction of my baby.

I would Rev mid RPMs bounce the front (push down hard on the handle bars) and drop clutch full throttle.

Not something I was all into...but effective enough to get some looks!
Cheers!

nice.. well maybe i will try to do some later on./... i need some more miles under the belt.. thanks for the input all :)

Not only Barna`s video contains a wheelie. The gs500e-power video section contains another very good wheelie movie:http://www.bikepower.net/gs500e-power/gs500e-power.htm
Go to: movies => by gs500e-power: it`s the movie on the bottom of the page. Enjoy and be careful!

dude, i wheelied 2day on the GS in a parking lot after work.  Scared me cause i like to try but have never succeeded till then.  I started to wheelie on a dual-purpose long b4 the GS.  If ur a new rider with a 600.  Im not gonna call u stupid but u should have started smaller.  I went 90, 250, then GS.  As i've gotten better i now want a 600.  Just for all the people who think my parents bought them 4 me.  Most people get cars 4 their 16th b-day. I got a dual-sport.  The 90 was my brothers.  and i bought the GS with my money after workin for a year.  With my sign on bonus from the army i will have enough for a 600.
