How hot is this thing supposed to get? And hanging revs.

So, as noob as this may be, how hot is the engine supposed to get, and how soon?  My GS hasnt been in ridable condition since i bought it (damn me and my attraction to projects!) until last night.
I put the Dynojet kit in (stage 3) because of my Lunchbox and in prep for my new exhaust.  I did not, however, change the pilot jet. I mistakingly thought that the dynojet kit would come with new pilot jets.
Opps.

So, the bike will start now and fire right up without choke. Will run fine for about 30 seconds, then start climbing in revs. The engine gets hot to the touch in about 30 seconds.
The bike pulls ok at lower revs, but hangs viciously at 4-5k. On a few occasions it hung so much, i shut the bike down. On restart it was ok.
Its hard to tune right now because i can't keep the darn thing to steady its idle long enough for me to make adjustments.
The carbs have not been synced, i'll be doing that today....
The screws are 2.5 turns out.

I looked up hanging revs, and got a myriad of different answers, none of which had the same setup.

Also did a compression test. Bang on for both cylinders.

Check for vacuum leaks with some carb cleaner, etc. open up the idle screws some more. Try a half turn at a time until your in the ball park, then fine tune.

Got it tuned up now that it runs steady at idle, and can rev evenly to redline, but hangs at 3500rpms
No vacume leaks that i can find yet...

Hopefully i can get one from somewhere by next weekend. Any reccomendations?

I just got a pair from Dennis Kirk.  Couple bucks apiece.

If you can't be a good example, at least try to be a horrible reminder.

+1 to Denniskirk. And they usually arrive 2 or 3 days later.

It's opener there in the wide open air...

If anyone happens upon this through a search...

A Carb sync seemed to do the trick for the most part.
Size 40 pilot jets should get it the rest of the way. I'll keep it updated.

What you think is a hanging idle could just be your idle set too fast.  You should wait until the bike is completely warmed up, like after a good 10 min ride, to set the idle.  My idle hangs around 3k if I have the idle set to fast.

Well, the weird thing is, if i start the bike, it'll idle around 1500. If i blip the throttle, it'll go back down, if i rev past 3000 it'll then hang at 3000 and wont come back down. I can shut the bike off and repeat the process just fine.
I didnt have a chance to test ride it last night because it was raining like mad.  I should probably change the pilots anyway for safety sake.

How quick is the engine supposed to get too hot to touch? Mine does it withing 30-45 seconds. That seems quick to me.

Thanks! Ordered! This site is a bit confusing to navigate, and they dont have my gs500 listed as an option in the sport bike category, so thats handy!

I don't think I'd worry about the engine temp...hard to say without seeing it I guess?   If there are no exhaust leaks or wierd noises I wouldn't worry about it.

Try turning the idle screw out and using a little choke to start it instead.  If you can't find a vacuum leak, I'm willing to bet that your idle is just set too high.
