Hi guys, names cameron im from the UK currently just bought my first project bike and it needs alot of attention to get it in any reasonable shape.

My plan is to put a SSSA, new subframe and USD forks on. IF anyone has a guide for sticking maybe a R1 subframe or something with the "dolphin" tail look + Shock info for a VFR400 NC24 swingarm. PM me or reply in this thread
Here is my journey so far.

This is what it started life out as, A track bike which had been trashed and then stored for 1 year or more.


Taking a look under the "hood"


I attempt to fix the brake sticking problem the last owner told me about.
I find the pistons seized and shoes are close to dust. I replaced all the pistons and got them all sorted. (No pics of the new ones yet.)


This is the broken stater solenoid, i have since replaced this and it turns out it's not the problem, im guessing the previous owner had a remote start on the bike as theres wires for it because the ignition button does not work.


Previous owner came off on a corner and bent the exhaust to shaZam! and sheared and seized in the downpipe bolts. Still trying to fix this :( might even buy a new engine if its cheap enough.


My new SSSA and old exhaust with the lazer can, i will be cutting down into a stubby :P


Took me a hour trying to get the back wheel off as everything is rusted to oblivion. Penetrating and hammering until i finally prevailed!


After the back wheel was removed i started to remove the swingarm... BAD IDEA. The whole shock linkage is extremely rusted in, im either going to have to buy a new bigger ratchet, get some heat on it or saw through it.


Finally got the shock linkage off, i cannot remove the bolt securing the dog bones but the rest came off :) blowtorch ftw!


The SSSA i have is slightly too big for my frame, by roughly 2MM. so ill take it down to the fabricator when ive got some spare time and see if he can mill the sides down. I also put my refurbed brake caliper back on the front, seems the braided hoses wont reach now though :p going to have to attach the hoses first and then attach it.


Got some longer braided hoses today :) buying them in red when the bikes being sprayed though :)


Thought i would check the air filter today, maybe clean with some compressed air i bought... Better be some powerful air to blow rust off...



Ok the SSSA is around 1 inch too big, going to have to machine that down. comparison:


Pulled back the rubber today to find the most amazing thing ever! A broken clutch lever and snapped bolt that keeps it tight, so thats a new assembly + cable i need to buy.... Well atleast you can get them in red :)



Wanted to check my front sprocket? (sure theres a name for it like on a BMX etc? chain drive?) there was like 3 years worth of shaZam! inside it.... I need to invest in a jetwasher, the degreaser isn't working! it's almost rock solid dirt.




Thats my story so far, i will update with more pics as i get more time.

You may have to mill one side down more than the other, besides 2mm is very little. Post back when you have it fiited.

what year is the swing arm.  Have you measured the frame width where the swing arm fits in?  If I recall, the vfr 400 swing arm should be about a 1/4 inch narrower then the frame.  I will post my link when i get home.  Could be your frame is just narrower from being tightened to your stock swing arm for so many years....

the year is 87-89 ? its the NC24 model. I pushed it in to get it to stick for the picture. Didn't give it a good try though. Still need to buy a rear caliper too :( my old rear had braided hoses and this one doesn't thats an extra £30 too

If your one of the previous owners then shame on you ;p that shoddy exhaust fix made me cry and the almost flush seize in bolt in the manifold also made me cry.

Here is some info on the swing arm.  I was looking to do the same conversion and picked the vfr400 arm based on its pivot point width.  It is interesting to see that yours is not fitting.  I guess take the info from the link with a grain of salt.

Doesnt fit at all into my frame i used some force to get it in and it wont reach the holes where the spindle thing goes in. It's slightly too big, my shock fits onto the linkage knuckle thing but ive just realized on the GS the knuckle linkage thing, (if you were facing the GS from the back) the closest hole towards you holds the shock, the middle holds the dogbones and the 3rd holds the linkage to the frame.

With the VFR the closest hole is attached to the swingarm, the furthest away from you would attach to the frame but the middle point where the dogbones went on the GS are massively wide, like dogbones should be there but where does the shock connect HMMMM. Theres a guy with  VFR in my local area, i might go down and check how his shock is attached.

Interesting, keep us posted.  Since you have both arms off, think you can weigh them both so we can get a weight comparison?  Im thinking of doing this swap on my track bike, but if the weight is significant then ill pass.

Previous owner has scraped the left side of the headlights, so if you dont mind that then sure, ill sell them cheap once ive got some replacements.

The weight difference is massive, without weighing them i can tell you the SSSA is around double the weight.

If its only a scrape then yeah that should be fine, I can always touch it up. I'd love to take them as soon as you find some replacements.

since it is torn apart..... take the engine to a machine shop and have the stub of a bolt removed.
not free..... but they will get you sorted quick enough

then remember.....   anti seize and safety wire will prevent it from ever happening again.
the bolts will either snap or fall off the bike.

i'd like to know where there were cheep enuf GOOD engines.   
want Iain's money to support my butt in kens shop

Interestingly, if you compare the bare swingarms you may find they are quite close in weight. In a single-sided-swingarm it is rear bearing eccentric assembly that makes for all the additional weight. Unfortunately this is also unsprung weight, which is why it fell out of favor in racing. Except for the Ducati, where it was considered so much a part of the appeal of the design they stuck with it, although their not-for-public-sale GP bike has a dual sided swingarm.

Sorry for the delay on messaging back guys. thanks for the support.

Ive been working alot and with a 15 hour shift tomorrow then a day of packing for my holiday on sat i wont be touching the bike for another week.

The swingarm is actually around 1 inch too big.

Once i know it fits i will then stratch my head on how the whole linkage system works because theres nothing for the dogbones to attach to. Might need to weld something not sure.
I will then strip down the bike ready for powdercoating, which im sure will include alot of problems as im slowly running out of tools due to rusted bolts winning the fight. Blowtorch helps alot though. Cant powdercoat until ive got a backend though, ive got a local fibreglass firm nearby but they didnt seem upto the challenge for one being made to fit a my backend with bits cut down.

If anyone knows of a small backend like half the size just for my arse then feel free to post some :)
