Did you squeeze the front brake lever while the wheel was removed?

The pads just need to be pryed back open. I use a flat screw driver or something similar to push the pistons back. Be careful not to dig into the pad surface.
Common sense in not very common.

yeah i did.... but now there way to tight to get something threw to pry open!

please help again

you need to open the bleeder valve to let it release, then just top off your rez. with some new fluid.

rez is refering to the resivouir for the brake master cylinder (little rectangular box ontop of handle bars). Take the top cover off of that to fill it up.

The brake bleed screw is on the caliper with the brake pads in it. It looks like a regular nut but it has a little hollow sphere on the back of it. All you want to do is loosen and then tighten that nut fairly quickly (careful not to strip it, its delicate) and then pry the pads apart. Repeat as nessecary. If you are lucky you won't need to bleed the brakes after doing this, but it would be a good idea anyway and you will get to learn some more basic maintenance things on the GS.

PS....Don't squeeze the brake lever while the rotor is not in the caliper next time.  :)

For what its worth, I am pretty sure everybody has done this at least once on a car or bike at some point or another so don't feel bad.

Here ya go:

You only need to turn the bleeder valve 1/8 to 1/4 turn before prying the pads apart.

You should have some way to "catch" the brake fluid that will come out.  There shouldn't be much, so you might get away with just stuffing an absorbent cloth or paper towel in the area.  Personally, I would push a drinking straw over the nipple to contain the fluid while you're working on the pads.

If I don't I just go out to the parking lot and take one.  (Like I just did.  I had to turn the bike around to catch the afternoon sun.)

One of these days I'll have a complete set!

Kerry, I for one really appreciate your efforts in picture taking, it really helps all of us.

Oh, yeah, make sure to move the handlebars so the resivoir is level before you open it, so brake fluid doesn't spill out on your gas tank. That would be very un-good.
