Hi guys when checking the oil on my GS500 should i have the dipstick screwed in or not?

pave_spectre

unscrew - wipe - dip - check - rescrew.
I like a non-sequitur as much as the next Giraffe.

mister

Bike should be upright as well - not on sidestand.

If you don't have anyone to help you and you cannot hold it upright yourself, sit on the bike. :thumb:

1 - unscrew
2 - wipe dipstick clean
3 - place dipstick so it sits there (do NOT screw it back in)
4 - remove and take reading
5 - if happy, rescrew  :thumb:

And watch out for the bits of road grit and crap that can collect around the oil-dipstick cap. Don't want that inside the gubbins.

Rag that wipes is the go.

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

What sort of oil do you guys recommend?

codajastal

I use 10w40 synthetic motoroil. Silkoline to be precise and I have never had a problem. Use it in 5 bikes and recommended by my mechanic mate.

Yea any 10w40 oil. Even car oil as long as it has not got that additive crap in it (cant think of the name atm?) it will say on the bottle it has additives.
