I am so tired of this crap, it smells, it's unattaractive, progresses your age, makes your hang-overs worse, and will eventually kill you! Plus, it is really hard to do while riding.

I quit smoking! I have been a smoker since I was 15 or so, and been smoking for the last 7-8 years. I have smoked in almost 2 weeks. I quit cold turkey, now I am addicted to sunflower seeds and eat almost everything in site! I bet I can 5 lbs. in the past 2 weeks. It is incredibly hard not to want one with a cold beer at the local bar, but if I can do it so can you.

If you have been thinking of quitting, do it before it's to late. If you thinking of starting, don't; use the money for a new bike or something else.

Sorry I just thought I would share my experience here, plus I really want a cigarette.  :nono:

Hey congrats on the decision.  You obviously want it for yourself so work for it.  I can tell you I had some weak moments at the bar and was pretty hard on myself for it the next day.  You are truely free when you don't get cravings at a bar  :thumb:

Sunflower seeds are good to keep your mouth busy.  I liked those and I also like the baby carrots b/c they pretty good too lol

I was also on a short fuse for a couple weeks and didn't realize it was from withdrawals until a few months later.

Its also going to save you money.  Pack a day at $4/pack runs about $1460/year.

Good choice! I smoked for 5 years and quit 2 years ago. The first 3 weeks are the hardest, then it gets better.
(Although even till 1,5 year after I sometimes had dreams of smoking a complete pack of Gauloises away in 1 time   )

But it has many advantages, you will feel healthier, you don't have to light a cigarette every hour, you don't have to pay lots of money for your addiction anymore and your condition will get A LOT better!

lots of success with quitting!  :thumb:

Congrats!!

Mark Twain said that EVERYONE quits smoking--  sooner or later...

I've quit dozens of times, but it seems to have stuck the last go-around (eight years this June 10).  Although the high cost for ciggies is a primary motivator, secondary benefits abound.  I'd recommend buying a good road and/or mountain bicycle and riding the hell out of it.  It's the quickest way to reverse the damage to your cardiovascular system, and it'll keep the pounds off while giving you something to do instead of eating sunflower seeds.  You'll become a Gatorade addict instead, which helps you cut back on the ale as well.  The more you ride, the better you'll feel and look.

Bicycling is a sport that a motorcyclist can love--  two wheels, and more than enough oppportunities to spend tons of money on the latest and greatest components.  Who knows?  You might swear off motorcycles entirely (I did for six years after taking up riding).

Keep up the battle, you can do it!

Stay away from the beer for awhile....might make it easier on yourself.

I quit smoking in 1982 at age 50 after smoking 3 packs a day for many years.  I too started at age 15.  Quiting smoking was harder than quiting drinking.

I quit drinking before that in 1978 at age 46 and am not gonna tell you how much I drank, only that I had far more than my share before I quit. Fortunately for me, I started riding in 1984 after I quit both.

I am an addictive type person and still find adrenalin an adequate substitute for both alcohol and nicotine.  Don't need a high powered machine either lika a HP freak does, lateral acceleration still provides my fix.

I quit after 19 years of smoking (started at 12).  It was damn hard.  Advice:  When you think you can't stand it another minute andare ready to crack ask yourself 'Who is stronger, me or the cigarette?'

Don't let a stupid tube of tobacco beat you.  :nono:

Thanks for the support guys/gals, its rough, esp. with all the stress of finals coming up and all, but I'm making it; I will make it.  Thanks for all the advice and encouragement, quitting something is really not my thing and it sucks when you are quitting by yourself too. I don't forsee giving up the bars any time soon, if ever.  Well, until the woman tells me so, hehe. I don't drink as much I used to, but then again I'm still in college and well that's about all there is to do here.  One of the reasons I did buy a motorcylce was to try to focus my interest on something else other than partying; focusing only on school gets to be a real drag after three years or so, plus i still have 3-4 more years ahead of me.

Thanks again to everyone. Times like these just go to show you what kind of people are out there all over the world. Maybe you meet the nicest people on a GS?

Thanks,
Adam

Nicest people... nope... I have been saying... when I am 50 I am going to start smoking, at 60 drinking and at 70 drugs. How's that sucka...

Hey Pablo i thought people couldn't smoke in bars out there - or even in public!

When they banned smoking in NYC it was so much easier for my band to play shows there. I smoked for 12 yrs and never realized how tired it makes you to spend your night in a smoky bar, not to mention the smell and guitar damage, even if you don't hit the sauce. I feel bad for smokers but it's out and common knowledge that it's a death sentence.
Congrats on quttin'!!

good job...i quit about 6 months ago, then i would light one up when i was at the bar drinking.....one turned into two, then three then 10 and now i'm back to a pack / day :(
i started smoking when i was 14 and a dumbass, trying to look cool like my older friends.

now when i think about how much money i spent on cigarettes, i could have bought a new bike and much more....

6 years, 1 pack/day (average) and a cartton is $55 - $60...you do the math

So lets see... 37 cartons per year.  times 6 years is 222 cartons approximately.  222 times $55 is ... 12,210.  So you could buy a zx10R or GSX-R1000 or R1 and have enough left over for taxes and insurance.  Hmmmm, lets see.  Smoke and potentially get cancer or ride a new R1... thats a tough one

The sad part is some of us may live longer smoking than riding a litre bike!  I'll take my chances on the litre bike though.
