Busy day in the Bike Cave.
Suzi's ASV levers went to Ryan's Honda, because that was the only Honda clutch lever I had. Suzi's Honda clutch perch got replaced with a GS500 perch. Then Suzi got LSL levers. Petrostar's bike got a new flasher relay and connected the vacuum line from the petcock to the carbs (no, he didn't screw it up - the PO did that). The petcock is happier with the vacuum line connected. The carbs are happier without that vacuum lean from the missing hose.
Still trying to take apart the newer forks to replace the seals.
Ryan did make-shift mirror extenders out of 4 of the rubber bushings used to hold the gauge bracket to GS500 handlebar top plates. It gave an extra inch or so each side. Not perfect, but a good temporary fix for those stubby mirrors on his CBR (He is an "Associate Member" of the West Seattle GS500 Cklub because he doesn't have a GS500.)

Suzi and Phenix had a nice ride on Vashon Island and a ferry ride. Zute72 rode Suzi.
FUN! TWISTIES!  :woohoo:

on THAT road?

it looks a bit... on the gravelly side.
dangerous?

Those are good roads. Old asphalt. We have to be careful after a rain due to run off and puddles and wet leaves and moss and some mud.

Mary: Are you wondering if the chain guard is high? It is exactly the same height as OEM. I made sure of that do airbrush's rear huggers would mount the same. It doesn't have the bend at the back like the plastic one - which may make it look higher.

Hmmm lets see:

Looks higher to me  :dunno_black:

Well not today but over the weekend...

Valve adjustment:

The left intake valve was less than .03mm.  Now the engine is running smoother and sounds much better.  The Suzuki dealer 10 minutes from my house said they would swap me shims.  I gave the guy at the service counter my 262 shim and asked for a 255.  They didn't have a 255mm but he gave me a 250, 260mm and gave me my 262 back.  He said that they just don't really use the 29.5mm shims anymore.  Luckily my left exhaust shim was a 255 which I swapped with the 250 to achieve the right specs.

New rear tire:

Old tire was cracking on the sidewall near the rim.

Installed Race Tech .90kg/mm springs:

Pretty easy installation.  I used a metal cutting blade on my miter saw for a nice smooth cut on the spacers.  Went with the standard 20mm of preload.  OMG what a difference!  I'm 195 lbs. and the stock springs were way too soft.  During the installation I discovered that my fork seals are leaking slightly.  I'll have to replace them soon but figured since they are not leaking much and since I just put in fresh oil, they can wait a month or two.

Replaced handlebars with Superbike bars:

Stock bars were tweaked from PO dropping the bike.  The new bars are flatter and give a little more forward lean.  I like!

New adjustable levers with Katana 600 clutch perch:

Love the new levers!  I can see why you might want to change the clutch cable to cable with a 90 deg bend from the perch.  It is touching the gauge cluster and makes adjusting the clutch a little difficult but I can live with it for now.

Had a few problems:

1. The fuel line for the reserve broke and had to replace.

2. Was dropping the bike off of the lift and lost my balance for a second.  I stumbled, trying not to drop the bike and stepped on the edge of the oil pan containing the old fork oil.  Flung dirty oil all over the right side of the bike, garage floor and myself.

3. Got everything back together and went for a quick test ride.  The front wheel was making a horrible noise.  Realized I did not tighten the brake caliper and it was hitting the mounting bolts of the rotor.  :embarassed:

Total time - 15+ hours.  Not too bad considering this was my first time working on this bike.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the message board for creating a great resource for GS500 owners!    :thumb:

Ok, when I get more time ( I have none LOL) I will grab the tape measure.

Okay I was really tired when writing this last night. Just by looking at the pic of them overlapped they are different sizes! Yes the hole is in the same spot but the chain is exposed. My concern is lube gonna go everywhere?

Anyone have some good chain recommendations?

Finished valve check, iridium plugs, mobil 1 oil change, and a nice two up ride.

In the end the most important piece of safety gear is the thing you put inside your helmet.

jestercinti

DID or Bikemaster makes a good chain Dizzledan.  Get O-Ring or X-Ring, and never replace again.

You originally talked about it being higher. It is same height.
As for oil flinging off, the oil flings off up and out from the chain as it rotates. It does not fling sideways. I've had them on all my bikes. Oil goes same place as with the factory chain guard: on the chain guard and the wheel rim. I haven't noticed oil anywhere it didnot normally go.

Phil B

Stopped by local bike store to get some fork oil.
Interestingly, they had lots of different brands, but only one "15W" oil.
and it was suzuki fork oil.
and it was the only suzuki fork oil.

So I got that :)

AND.. I got some cheap-n-nasty replacement mirrors, for my "F to E" restoration.
Literally cheap-n-nasty.  They cost $10 for the PAIR. and they look nasty. something like:

BUt hey.. They fit really easy, soon as I took the little "plugs" off the slot covers on my handlebars.
(They're 10mm slots, btw, if anyone needs to know)

I'll post actual pics of the bike, when I have it all fixed.

hm. actualy, maybe I'll post in the "projects" area :)

Kept the reassembly up yesterday. Got to the hose routing to the carb when I realized I'll need one new hose because the PO (who had the hoses routed wrong in the first place) also used a larger hose than what it should've been.
