Reserve tank problem

So I've been having this problem with my reserve tank, and haven't had the time to fully diagnose the problem. When I hit my reserve tank, and I flip the petcock over, my bike dies. Line are routed correctly, I am sure. Now my question to you all is this: Do you guys think the issue lies in the tank petcock, the fuel line, or the frame petcock? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Graham

Just to make sure, you are configured correctly according to YOUR model?  Apparently there are 3 configurations. See this post:

yes, I'm sure. Either way, the frame petcock says RES and ON on the tubes the hoses go on, so its pretty easy to tell what goes where. I'm thinking the bottom of my tank petcock is clogged up with gunk, or my reserve hose is clogged up with gunk.

So, have you tried flipping it onto reserve when you have a full tank?

Another possibility is that you have water in the tank.  When you switch to reserve it picks up fuel (or whatever) from the bottom of the tank rather than from a couple inches higher in the tank.  If you've got bad fuel or the bike has sat for a long time and water condenses in the tank it settles to the bottom and will be fed to the carbs when you switch to reserve.

The way to diagnose this problem is to run the bike, switch to reserve and let it die, then drain the carb float bowls into a glass container.  If there is water in there, you will see separation in the drained fluid.

+1

Should let you know for sure there is something wrong with the reserve circuit.

Yea, I have done that and the bike cuts out in pretty short order. I'm gonna do this: Remove the reserve hose from the frame petcock and see if anything comes out. I suspect nothing will.
