Ran the bike out of gas today. Well, not totally out, I still got home but she kept stalling and was real low on power. Added some gas from the house, took it around the block and everything was back to normal. But anyways, now that I've done that, I'm curious if there is a fuel filter on the GS500 and where it might be?

And if anyone knows where to get a cheap gas cap, I need one of those... I have to open mine with a screwdriver lol

So how many miles did you get out of the tank, running it all the way to empty? Also, how far were you able to get, once it started sputtering? That would be good to know for us GSers  :icon_mrgreen:

Once she started sputtering and stalling out I limped her 2 miles back home. Can't comment on the tank as I just bought the bike a couple weeks ago and am taking my MSF course tomorrow. I've got the plate on it so just riding it around my neighborhood. I estimate I've ridden it probably 50 miles so it probably had just under a gallon when I bought it. But my next tank should yield some good results!

Sidenote: Does leaving it on PRIME lead to making the bike run richer than if the switch was just ON? I've wondered about that but I'm not sure. After this, it's something I'd like to know. I get the fuel starvation problem with it on ON

There is an in-tank fuel Screen. That's all you need. Any after market fuel filter you put between your tank and carbs can reduce fuel flow and essentially starve the engine of fuel.

If your bike will not run on "On" you have either a pinched fuel line or the diaphragm has a hole in it. Trace your fuel lines carefully first to make sure they are not pinched or kinked.

I did the same thing last week.  Puttering around the neighborhood, then stall,...wth?  'Oh, need gas.'  DOh!

Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure to check on it! I've only had it on ON once and it stalled and wouldn't start after... But it was still cold and choked then too. I hope I don't have pinched lines :(
