New name for the bike after the newest issue arose. My brain is fried from finals but I've been looking constantly for a diagnosis and so far no luck, so I was hoping somebody in the community had a similar issue...

Recently got the bike started back up after a lot of tinkering (same problem I had in Dec, bad gas- guess I should check that first next time).

The new problem is, after a few minutes of warming up, the RPM's shoot straight up to 5/6k and hold there. I've tried adjusting the idle mix and even then I can only get it down to ~5k. Now normally I would just say it's a vacuum leak and start spraying WD-40, but since this doesnt happen til it's warmed up I'm confused. I would think the expansion from heat would seal up a leak, not start one....

Please you guys, any help would be amazing. I'm almost 2000 deep in this bike and I havent even gotten to ride it in the sunshine!

Try turning down the idle with the idle adjust screw.

Then when cold, maybe it needs choke longer?

If you feather the clutch to slow the engine, does it stay down or go back up? If back up, again, try the idle screw. also check that the choke and throttle are not sticky or binding up anywhere.

Idle adjust screw has gone to both ends of the spectrum, and it would only raise it. And I can start the bike with no choke and let it sit & run, and then several minutes in it will just jump up to 5k.

Any chance the choke cable is getting stuck open? Mine was sticky when I first got it, the lever would be all the way closed, but that little play in the cable left the choke open on the motor enough to mess with it.

It's called floating idle and common. Do a search in the FAQ for the fix list.

What about the throttle cable? Is there any play in it? Should have about 1/4" of play. Maybe the throttle cable is too tight. At least try loosening it to see what happens.

Aaaaaand this is why I just put this bike on craigslist. Thanks for the help, GSTwins. I would say it's been a good ride but, well, this bike blows and hasnt really ever been rideable.

That's how I got mine too.  PO was sick of that high idle.  Took off carbs, cleaned, checked all my lines, used good clamps and so far so good.  Had to order/replace a couple dinky parts.  This past weekend rode for longest ride yet with my son and it was great.  Sorry you couldn't get yours straight.
