Hi,

I just recently purchased a 2000 GS500E. I'm pretty happy with it but the exhaust is pretty gnarly. I'm new to bikes and i'm new to GStwin.com so I could use some tips/advice.

I'd like to replace it or fix it if that's possible but I have no idea where to start or what muffler to get.

I didn't spend a ton of money on the bike so i'd like to not spend a ton of money on the exhaust. Am i being silly here?

Thanks a lot. Great resources you guys have here.

Welcome to the nut house.  :cookoo:

It is nice to know where you are. Can you update your profile to include your city? People may be near you who have one.

If you were close to Seattle, I have a couple really nice stock exhausts you could have for next to nothing. For other choices, pinwall cycles on ebay often has really good ones for under $100 and maybe $25 shipping.

Any other choice for an aftermarket exhaust will cost $200-$500. You might find a slip-on for around a hundred. Browse ebay for "gs500 exhaust".

Cool - exhaust held on with bailing wire! I don't see any duct tape  :icon_lol:
You seem to be missing the center stand. That's handy to have.

Hi!

Thanks. I updated my profile. I'm in Chicago.

I'll check out Ebay.

Would you recommend i buy the whole piece or just the can? Is this something i can do? (i can't weld) Ideally, i'd like to get more familiar with the bike and be able to do some of the maintenance.

It's been dropped at least once

so i'm going to try and start by replacing the brake lever and the exhaust (at least so it's not ghetto rigged like that).

I noticed that the center stand was missing. I'm going to get that as well from Ebay.

Thanks very much for replying so quickly. Appreciate it.

You might want to look into some bar end weights/protectors as well and maybe a rear grab bar to go along with the center stand, depending on your vision for the bike. Depending on your stature, you would either use the grab bar or the frame on the left side to put the bike up on your new-to-you center stand. See adidasguy's how to put your bike on the center stand video in this thread for more info.

Check the Chicagoland Craigslist, too. I sometimes see gs500 parts listed there.

Also, for a nice timing cover to replace the horribly scratched one, (Suzuki logo on right side of engine) look for chuck81's post in the for sale section.

Pics of the left side?

You do not need to weld if you get a slip on. You cut off your pipe at the proper place. The slip-on, well, slips on! Then you tighten a bolt on the clamp and you're done.

You should get the proper mounting rubber grommet, bolt and washers for the exhaust. You can see what parts you need at most any parts site by looking in the parts diagrams. There are a few parts whores here. Post a want-to-buy and list the parts you need. Often you can get parts off other members cheaper and faster.

Brake lever easy to replace. I have a few videos on GS500 maintenance and there is a list of most known videos here:

I definitely want to get the center stand. My garage is a structure and i park on an incline. It would help there.

I'll definitely check the Chicago craigslist. Amazingly, i've only seen one full GS500E for sale there. I got that one! :)

yeah that timing cover bugs the hell out of me. basically the entire right side annoys me but i'm a freak about it and i need to not let it get to me.

paid $1000 for it. (don't tell me if i overpaid ;p)

Left side sir.

You give karma by clicking on the "applaud" thingy  (or Karma korns as we call them  -- I love karma korn! )

Your price is good. Here in Seattle things go for $1700+. Some even sell used 2007 models for $3500 when you could buy a new 2009 for $4000! Go figure?

Here's a link for pinwall cycles GS500 parts. They are a very reputable bike breaker in Ohio. Things like nearly new brake calipers $15-$20. When I need new brake pads for my older bikes, I just do that - buy a caliper from a 2009 or 08 and put it on. Cheaper than replacing pads and doing a rebuild. You'll find lots of tips on saving money and parts compatibility over the years.

Here's the link:

Update: Center stand $9.95+$13 postage. Cheap! Any year center stand is compatible.

If it doesn't come with bolts and springs, just post a WTB. I have plenty. Though it appears it includes them.

There is a rubber bumper on the exhaust for the center stand. post a WTB if you need that. Might as well include the muffler mounting bolt & bushing. You need those no mater what ehtaust you put on.

I am blind. I clearly do not see an "applaud" thingy. help a newbie find it. :)

Going to pick up my helmet tonight. i'll be sure to check out the pages you guys have recommended.

thanks again.

(I number my posts -- it is a board joke when I hit 5000 posts)

The APPLAUD is under the work KARMA. It will be on OTHER people, not you because you can't pat yourself on the back. Click the APPLAUD on the person you want to give karma korn to.

MMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmm....... karma Korn and beers!

Perhaps a minimum number of posts are required before you can give karma korn. That sounds reasonable.

A moderator might confirm how many posts required.

The figurative karma Koran is better for those of us who are trying to shed some pounds, though. :thumb:

Damn you autocorrect!  :technical:  I meant to type korn, not Koran.

I've only seen Yoshi slip ons. Looks like that person either welded it or is selling the slip-on plus the header pipes as a unit. (UPDATE: I see the springs holding it to the pipe. It is a slip-on sold with the header pipes.)

Here's a really good stock for a good price:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/01-Suzuki-GS500-GS-500-EXHAUST-MUFFLER-SYSTEM-/190670471235?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c64d88043&vxp=mtr

Here's your mounting bushing and bolt that goes on the rear passenger peg:

This is a Sito slip-on. About the same sound as stock. I have it on one bike that had an exhaust all trashed like yours:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-2000-Suzuki-GS500E-Sito-Exhaust-Silencer-/400211218975?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d2e72921f&vxp=mtr

This costs what you paid for your bike - maybe more. I have it on  Phenix. Pretty nice and looks great. It is the one I installed in my video. Any GS500 exhaust fits any year GS500.

All,

Thanks very very much. I got some great ideas and links now. I applaud you in real life since i can't applaud on the forum yet.

I'll be purchasing the exhaust today.

i'm not sure where the bushing and the bolts are for. Has anyone been kind enough to put up a video of this install? or pics?

i don't really even know where/how it mounts but i'm willing to give it a proper attempt.

I don't see a need to weld here (is that about right?)

thanks again!

This place is awesome!
