Bent shift fork?

So I'm new here.  I just got my bike, and it turns out that the 3rd gear shift fork is bent.  It is a 92 gs500. 

Moving on...

Is there a possibility to replace this?  Can I swap for a more recent 6 speed tranny?  Any ideas on where to proceed?  I feel like I got burned and I am furious that this happened.  I got this bike to have a quick commuter, and now I have a project.  What are your thoughts, guys?

What year shift forks fit, what do I look for when I tear it apart?  I have many questions, and I would love to get some expert advice.  Please let me know guys.

Mods?  Probably a few, nothing to brag about.

I believe all years are the same. To verify, go to ronayers.com or bikebandit.com and look at the part #s for the various years.

I'm not aware of any GS500 that doesn't have a 6 speed box...are you sure that you don't have a 6 speed gearbox??
BTW, are you sure you have a bent shift fork?
I don't know if in this particular bike you can do it, but in a CBR you can remove the exhaust headers, drop the oil pan, clutch cover, clutch, remove the shift spindle, and you can access the forks without removing the engine from the case! You should check the gear "dogs" too, I'm not sure if you can check them this way.
Anyway, I've found the gearbox in the GS500 very appropriate and reliable, so no reason for a swap...I think!

Yeah. It seems that this is a 6 speed gear box. That makes me happy. I am having trouble getting the case split. The motor is out and I don't think there is a way to get to the gears any easier. Now I just need to figure out how to split the case, as it seems to be very intent on staying sealed. I think I need a bigger hammer.

You probably missed the bolt under the starter motor. You can't get to the GS tranny without splitting the cases.

It was the bolts under the oil filter!  I see that third gear has a tooth missing, so I ordered a tranny and forks set off eBay. Great price and free shipping! 

Now I have to wait till that comes on and my new gasket set. I have some pics I'll post about taking this all apart. It won't be a walk through, but just a quick documentation of the journey.

Now all I need is a muffler. Anyone have an exhaust for sale?

Can't get to much of anything through the oil pan. Maybe the big end bolts, but I'm not sure. There are q bunch of oil passages through the lower case that are in the way, and if you look the tranny is more or less behind the pan.

Thanks for the info...I know that you are the guy that know about these bikes, and how to ride them too!  :icon_twisted:

I made that suggestion due to the fact the in the CBR600 F4, you can change the shift drum and forks from the bottom (oil pan), with the engine in the frame. A lot of guys split the cases just to find that after all the didn't need to!


Back to the topic...that GS500 had some abuse in it...I can't even think of what is needed to blow up a gear teeth in this bike!
